Summary: Ford and Teyla overhear... well, *something*

"What are you doing, L--"

"Shhh, Teyla... just come here..."

Ford was crouched behind a collapsible partition, listening to what might have been the most interesting conversation he had ever heard. He was absolutely sure that Major Sheppard and Dr. McKay didn't know he was there... it wasn't like them to stage something like this, not with the way they'd been trying to quell the rumors spawned by what Beckett referred to as the 'Stapler Incident'...

Teyla crouched beside him and was soon as enthralled as he.

"Fuck!"

"What now?"

"I can't get it up..."

"That's not what I want to hear, McKay! Hurry up, I'm dying."

"Are not... I don't think that's even possible."

"You want to find out, keep talking..."

There was a short pause and then,

"Fuck!"

"What?!"

"I dropped it..."

"God, McKay, I thought you wanted to do this."

"I do."

"Then *do it* already... before I change my mind."

A longer pause, followed by,

"John..."

"You know I didn't mean it Rodney."

"Right. You know I only agreed to this because you begged me."

"Of course, and I'm ready to get down on my knees and resume--"

"Not necessary, Major... Begging really doesn't suit you."

"Well, thank you, McKay... I think I'm flattered."

"Don't let it go to your head."

"I thought that was the point...?"

"Look, will you just focus for once? I've almost got it... a little more... higher, Major. What don't you understand about higher? More... more... more... Just a-- a--- little--- *more*... right-- right-- right-- *there*!"

A much longer pause this time... Teyla was practically hyperventilating.

"Wow, Rodney... that was almost obscene..."

"Shut up."

"I mean, I didn't know you had it in you."

"I think I just said shut up, Major."

"Are you blushing?"

"Stop it. We still have work to do..."

"You are!"

"Will you just drop it already?"

"Who'da thunk it? McKay, doctor, scientist... and world-class banner hanger!"

Ford and Teyla toppled with a crash, falling into view. Rodney stood, stapler in hand, staring at them while Sheppard was still admiring the banner they had hung. It read 'Happy Birthday, Carson!'. Sheppard glanced over at them, hands on his hips.

"Are you guys here to help us set up? You're right on time..." He turned back to Rodney. "McKay, 'Operation Keep The Party A Secret From Carson' is in effect!"

"Still think it's a stupid thing to call a secret operation..." Rodney grumbled. Ford untangled himself from Teyla and stood, grin in place.

"How about 'Operation Bannerman'?"

"Oh, shut up!" Rodney snapped. "Thought you didn't get to name things anymore?"

Sheppard clapped Rodney on the shoulder.

"You heard him, McKay... 'Operation Bannerman' is underway."

"Fuck you..." Rodney muttered as he left to go distract Carson and generally make him think that everyone had forgotten his birthday.

Standard stuff.

He didn't notice the look of relief that passed between Ford and Teyla.

John did.

He hefted the stapler that he had relieved Rodney of and put the finishing touches on their masterpiece with a smirk.

'Operation Slowly Win Over Rodney McKay' was right on schedule.
