Summary: Prelude to the first story with my suprise pairing

Rodney hadn't had a girlfriend until he was fifthteen. He's seen all his friends find love while he was left on his own. When his first boyfriend had left him, he felt like he was going to die. The pain passed when he realized that he had only been with him to fit in.

After that he had many relationships, some lasting only a few months, others up to a year. None of them ever really meant anything to him. Sure he was happy and did feel love for the women he was with, but he was never in love with any of them. Then at eighteen he met Kevin.

Kevin was the most amazing person he'd ever met, both physically and mentally. He wasn't what most people would call handsome, but he had the most startling blue/green eyes framed by short black hair. Rodney would get lost in them as he and Kevin talked about everything from Shakespeare to Rocky Horror, science fiction to science fact. The five months they were together were the happiest in Rodneys life.

Then he was gone. There was never an explanation, he was just gone. One night he dropped Rodney off at home and the next no one could find him. His home and bank account were empty, so was Rodney. He cried whenever he heard his name, whenever she thought about him, all the time. After awhile he ran out of tears but the pain remained. His room-mate told her one day, 'It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.'

There were many sayings Rodney disliked, but this one he truly hated. He never understood how anyone could believe it. 'It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.' How could someone really buy into that? In order to, he thought, they must have never been with the one they loved or never had there loved one leave them. He remembered what it had been like before he had ever loved anyone and he preferred it to how he felt now. Even before he had ever loved someone he knew this line was wrong. Why would anyone ever think that it was better to be in such pain? Sure you might have a few nice memories but were they really worth the emotional hell that came after?

Rodney couldn't think of an answer for any of this. All he knew for certain was that, whether he wanted to or not, he would be through that hell again. All because of one man; one infuriating, smart, asshole of a man. Rodney was prepared to do whatever it took to get him too.
