Summary: Jack's avoiding Daniel. Daniel won't rest until he finds out why

Jack awoke still confused and a little apprehensive but much more positive about the future. He'd also thought of a possible solution to the problem of hiding the pregnancy. He just hoped they'd be able to get in touch with Thor.

Daniel rose early. He'd had a very disturbed night filled with images he'd rather not think about. In truth all he could think about was Jack. Something was going on and he was determined to find out what it was.

"Sir, as much as I don't like the idea of handing over a patient to... you know what I mean sir. I think the Colonel's idea has some merit." Doctor Frasier had been wrestling with the Colonel's problem all night and had come up with nothing. She realised that this once again proved that Jack wasn't as dumb as he made out.

"Why thanks Doc," Jack smirked, that coming from Janet was high praise indeed.

"So we contact the Asgard and take it from there," nodded the General.

"Yes sir," replied the two officers.

Daniel had arrived at the base early. After asking the security detail to inform him when Jack arrived, he'd finally tracked him down to the General's office. Through the star map he could see Jack, Janet and the General in deep discussion. He noticed that eventually all three nodded and began to rise.

Daniel stood as the door opened. Janet was the first through the door; she stopped and gave him a warm but nervous smile. Jack following close behind came to a sudden halt almost bumping into Janet. His eyes grew wide and began to dart around the room.

"Good morning Daniel."

"Good morning Janet," Daniel replied. He noticed as he spoke that Janet placed a gentle hand on Jack's arm. Jack opened his mouth as if to speak but closed it again quickly.

"Morning Dr. Jackson is there something I can help you with?" the General asked.

"Actually I was hoping to speak with Jack," he replied never taking his eyes from his friend. Jack's expression changed rapidly from nervous to scared in seconds.

Jack spoke without meeting Daniel's gaze, "love to stop and chat Daniel but um..." he turned to the general, "sir I have to get on to that thing you know as quickly as possible to see if the other thing can actually be done. So I'll be going if that's okay sir." He waved vaguely around the room and at the general's nod moved so fast from the room all Daniel could do was stare open mouthed at the two remaining officers.

"What..." Daniel waved vaguely at the door way. "He... what did I do now?"

Janet looked at Daniel and could easily see his anger, frustration and hurt. But until the Colonel was ready to talk there was little she could do. "The Colonel is just a little..." she wasn't sure how to phrase it, "upset at the moment. He's fine," she added quickly at Daniel's expression. "It's just he may need some time. It's probably best to leave him be for a while." She watched as with slumped shoulders Daniel left the room.

Right, that's it thought Daniel. He headed straight to Sam's lab. But it seemed 'the thing' needed her help too. "So Carter, can you contact Thor right away and say it's a matter of life and death." Daniel stood glued to wall outside her office. Life and death?

"Of course Sir I'll get on it immediately. Um Sir..."

"Yes Carter," Jack drawled.

"What life and death situation Sir," after all Thor might need to know. He may need some special technology or something.

Way to go Sam, thought Daniel, maybe Jack didn't have the same problem with Sam he seemed to have with him.

"Carter its need to know and at this present time you don't need too...you know, know." Daniel couldn't help shaking his head. What the hell was going on?

"Yes, Sir."

"I, er, have to, er go now," Sam smiled at the Colonel now waving his expressive hands.

Daniel glanced around he had no where to go. So taking a deep breathe he walked into the lab, head held high and straight in to Jack.

Daniel for his part held his ground. Jack on the other hand gave out a startled yelp and practically jumped out of Daniels space. "Daniel!" was that a squeak. Jesus get a grip Jack. God was Daniel stalking him now.

"Hey Jack. I was wondering if I could talk to you for a few minutes." Daniel saw the frightened look quickly appear and then disappear.

"Can't. Gotta go. Busy, busy, busy." And with that Jack once more bolted for the door.

Daniel could see Sam watching the whole scene with a puzzled and amused expression. She now looked at him and raised her eyebrows.

He shrugged his shoulders, "must be my new aftershave."

Sam snorted. "What can I do for you, Daniel?"

"Your dad's due in soon isn't he?"

"Yeah, some time late tomorrow, can't wait. We're still hoping to go see Mark for his fortieth, barring intergalactic catastrophes that is." She looked at him carefully, "why?"

"Could you get a message to him," he asked.

"What am I a messenger service now?" she smiled. When she saw Daniel's worried face she became concerned. "I can try. It can be difficult getting hold of the Tok'ra now but I'll try. What do want to ask him?"

"Can you ask him to bring a Tok'ra memory device with him?"

"Is this about what happened on..."

"Yes," he cut her off quickly.

"Is that such a good idea, Daniel? Maybe it would be better not to know what happened."

"Sam something happened, I have no idea what but it's...Jack won't even stay in the same room with me. He won't tell me what's going on. I mean what's with all the secret meetings with Janet and Hammond and the urgent need to get in touch with Thor?"

"I don't know Daniel. I wish I did. I'll try and get message to dad." She gave him an encouraging smile.

"Thanks Sam. I'll see you later."

Jack had bolted for his office so quickly; he'd left behind a wake of startled airmen. Fuck! Thor had better get here soon, Jack sighed deeply. He knew he was making a complete idiot of himself around Daniel but he couldn't seem to stop himself!

He so wanted to spill his guts to Daniel. The Doc and Hammond had been amazing but he didn't feel able to discuss his inner most feelings with them. There were few people on this planet he'd ever been able to discuss them with.

As a child he'd confided in his mother, then his younger sister Mary. Later it was his best friend from the Academy Jed. All of them had been gone for a long time now and the only person he wanted to talk too, he couldn't. He locked his door, sat down at his desk and laid his head on his arms. He fell into a heavy slumber.

Jack was still in his office even thought it was now well past midnight. His phone had woken him a couple of times. He'd debated answering but he was convinced it was Daniel so he'd ignored it. He knew he was correct when Danny had tried his office door a few times. Jack had ignored that too and pretended he wasn't there. He wasn't proud, he knew he was being a coward but until he'd talked to Thor he felt as if he was in limbo.

There was another knock at the door. Dammit! Doesn't he ever give up? Stupid thought Jack, Daniel never gave up on anything especially him! Thank god. "Colonel O'Neill Sir, are you in there the General wishes to see you in his office immediately sir."

The young airman sounded nervous talking to his door. He nearly fell over when Jack swung the door open quickly; he'd obviously had his ear to the door listening for sounds of life inside. "Sir, your, um the Gen...gen...er..." the airman stuttered.

"Its okay airman, I heard ya. Dismissed." The young man looked relieved and quickly scuttled away from O'Neill.

Jack kept glancing at his watch as he hurried towards Hammond's office. He knocked on the door and waited for the order to enter. As he stepped into the room he felt a sudden sense of relief wash over him.

"Greetings O'Neill," said the little grey alien.

Jack couldn't help but grin. "Thor, buddy you don't know how glad I am to see you."

"So I hear O'Neill." Jack glanced towards the General. "General Hammond has informed me of your predicament and your how you wish for my help to resolve the situation."

At Hammond's nod, Jack slumped into the nearest chair. "Thor I know it's a lot to ask but is there any chance you can help?" Jack couldn't help the despair he heard in his voice.

"I believe I can. Although this is very different to the situation with your clone I believe it should not be to difficult to do. It may take a few days to get the desired result. It is a complex procedure but both you and your child should be quite safe."

"Thanks Thor, you don't know how much this means to me, us." He said vaguely waving in the General's direction. "So when can we get started?"

"Immediately O'Neill." With that there was a blinding light and General George Hammond was staring at two now empty seats.

* * *

Aboard Thor's ship Jack stared at Earth through the window. It didn't matter how many times he saw this it never got old.

"Do you require anything before we begin O'Neill," enquired Thor gently.

"Yeah, my memory would be good," he muttered. Suddenly he looked at Thor and tilted his head. "Thor buddy do you have anything that'll help me remember how this happened?"

"Of course O'Neill but General Hammond informed me of the details of what happened to you. Are you sure you wish to remember? It may be traumatic for you especially in your condition."

Jack wasn't sure whether to laugh out loud or be totally outraged by that statement. All he could do was shrug his shoulders. "If I'm ever going to be able to...I need Daniel to get through this but not knowing is just messing with my head." With a deep breath and a nod of his head he said, "Let's do it."

"As you wish O'Neill."

The next morning the remaining members of SG-1 were seated around the briefing room table. Hammond informed them that Thor had needed Jack's help urgently and that he would be on the mission for several days. Everyone knew that it didn't make sense. They had called Thor not the other way around. But Hammond wouldn't elaborate or be drawn on anything. So resignedly they all left to go about their various duties.

Daniel wasn't happy he was becoming increasingly desperate. He was worrying so much about Jack he wasn't sleeping. Jack meant the world to him and he hated the feeling that he didn't trust him. Or worse that what ever was wrong, what ever was hurting Jack it was all his fault.

He sort out Janet again but she still wouldn't tell him a damn thing. He felt like punching something. Jack preferably! But as he was schlepping all over the universe with his best bud Thor he'd just have to make do with a punch bag in gym.

* * *

By early evening Daniel was totally exhausted from his stint in the gym. But it hadn't really helped all he could think about was Jack.

Suddenly the alarms went off. "Off world gate activation, off world gate activation."

Daniel jumped up from his desk and raced towards the control room. He arrived just in time to see Jacob Carter walking=g down the gate ramp. In one hand he carried a small brief case. As he glanced up to the control room he smiled warmly at Sam and spotting Daniel gave a small nod and raised the case slightly.

Daniel was terrified of what he might remember but if he was ever going to get Jack back he needed to know the truth.
