Summary: Sam and Janet deal with the events of the weekend and their effect on their friendship
The room was empty when Sam got back. That was a relief as well as a worry. She still had to figure out how to handle what she had learned. Or even if she should.
Looking at the clock radio between the beds, she figured Janet was already downstairs. They had agreed to meet Cass before the convention dinner and that was only about thirty minutes away. If Janet wasn't ready, she'd still be here...
Wouldn't she?
Sam smiled and shook her head. This was Janet. Of course she'd be ready. The woman was always early and it took her a half-hour just to get ready to go grocery shopping, for cryin' out loud.
Sitting on the bed, Sam picked up the TV remote. After her talk with Yolanda Reese earlier, she thought it best if she stayed in for the evening to try and figure things out. She'd make her apologies later to Janet and Cassandra.
As she looked for something mindless to occupy her eyes while her mind continued to race, the phone rang.
"Yes?"
'Sam? Where are you?'
With a chuckle, Sam replied, "Where did you call, Cass?"
'Ha-ha. Very funny. Are you coming down here soon? They're about to let us into the room.'
"I don't know... I'm not feel..."
'Aw, c'mon! You promised!' Cassie interrupted.
Sam sat silently for a moment. She really had a hard time saying no to Cassie. "Alright. I'll be down in a few minutes."
'Great! I'll save you a seat at our table.'
"Thanks, kiddo."
Sam hung up with a smile. She really loved that pain-in-the-ass teenager.
Digging in the closet, she pulled out a pair of dark slacks and a white blouse. She hopped into the shower for a quick wash down then out to brush her damp hair and climb into the clothes she picked out.
Straining with the tight pants, she promised herself she'd never put these particular pants on again fresh out of the shower. And to get some running in the next morning.
Looking in the mirror, she thought she was presentable enough and headed out of the room. In fact, she looked extremely hot. The tight black pants, the white blouse, and the damp, slightly curly hair made her the object of everyone's eye on her way to the Minoru Rooms, male and female.
Of course, being Sam Carter, she didn't catch on.
Entering the room, she gazed the crowd around the various tables to find her girls. She saw Cass waving at a table across the room and, after a stop at one of the mini-bars set up in the corners, made it to the table.
Cassie was wearing one of her new blouses and stone-washed jeans. Janet, on the other hand, was stunning in a wine-dark dress with spaghetti straps and a plunging back, her auburn hair pinned up.
She greeted everyone there. She was sitting between Janet and Cassie with Jim Barrents and his nieces, Krista and her daughter and a couple of folks she didn't know.
"Sam, this is Bon and Trance."
"Hi. Nice to meet you."
Bon, the smaller, slightly older woman, shook Sam's hand. "Hear you're Air Force. I'm retired Army."
Sam nodded, "We work with some grunts at Cheyenne. They're good people." She then turned to the taller, black woman. "Trance?"
"Yes, nickname." Sam nodded and she went on, "I'm from Maryland. I understand you were at the Pentagon for a while."
Sam looked sharply at Cass and said, "Yes. For a few years. Got transferred to Colorado Springs and away from all the politics."
As she turned to have a chat with Cassandra about talking too much, Bon asked Trance, "Where's Xe?"
"Dunno. Probably getting a drink or two," Trance replied.
"Long as she doesn't forget me."
Trance and Bonnie turned to chat with the Stuffy Guard at the next table.
Two late arrivals, looking a bit flushed, came and sat at the last two open chairs. "Hi, I'm John and this is Tracy. Sorry we're late. We were..."
Tracy giggled and Sam smiled knowingly as the rest welcomed the young couple.
A few moments later, the dinner service started. Salads were brought out followed by the entree and then desserts. The food, for the most part, was quite good.
Sam, who had barely acknowledged Janet, spent most of the meal talking to Jim and Krista who were directly across from her at the circular table.
"...and after the game, he left me outside of Lambeau Field in a crowd of angry Bear fans with a five mile walk home!"
"Hey, I told you I'd be right back," Jim said. "I had some pool money to pick up at the North Woods Inn."
Krista winked at Sam, "Right back. When it comes to that dive, I know he'll be there for two or three hours. At least."
Jim took her hand and said, "Never again."
"I've heard that before," she grumbled, throwing a grin at Sam.
Those at the table in that particular conversation laughed with the Wisconsin couple. Sam noted that Jim held onto Krista's hand and the brunette didn't seem to mind.
'Good for them. They make a cute couple,' the blonde thought. But that turned her thoughts to Janet and... She shook her head, she was having a good time and was not going to worry about secrets and lies and...whatever else there was.
Janet interrupted her thoughts, leaning over and whispering, "Sam?"
"Yes?" Sam replied in a somewhat distracted voice.
"You look tremendous!"
"Thanks."
"Are you mad at me?"
"No. Why would you think that?"
"All you've said to me all evening was hello and thanks. Is there something you want to talk about?"
"Ye... No." Sam glanced at Janet, "You look great too?" She dropped her gaze.
"Sa-am..."
"Well, you do."
"Sam, look at me."
Sam did as Janet asked. Those wide, brown eyes were always a source of comfort for her. Now, she felt pain and a sense of loss for some reason.
"Sam, please talk to me."
"Not here."
Janet stood and held out her hand. Sam looked at her quizzically then let Janet pull her to her feet and away from the table.
"We'll be back," Janet told Cassie as they headed to an empty area near the back of the room.
"Okay. No one here so we can talk. Cards on the table, Sam. Something's bothering you. What is it?"
Janet's tone was sharp, almost angry. This was her professional voice and patients only ignored that to their peril.
"Janet, we've always been open with each other, right?" Janet nodded. "No secrets?" Janet's nod wasn't as sure. "Then when were you going to tell me about her?"
Janet followed Sam's gaze to a table near the front where several celebs were sitting. Seeing Lannie there, Janet groaned.
"Oh, Sam... How did... Never mind." She stopped, blinked several times then said, "I...I never knew what to say. You're career Air Force."
"Janet, I'd never say anything to..."
"I know. I know, Sam. But, if you were asked directly by General Hammond or... I didn't want to put that burden on you.
"And, it was never a factor. I promise. Lannie was the...the first person I've been with in...a long time. I'm sorry I never told you anything before."
"It's just that...it hurt Janet. I feel closer to you than anyone. Ever. And to find that there was something like this that you never shared... Never talked about... This is big, Janet. Huge."
Sam looked at Janet through teary eyes to see the young doctor's eyes were brimming with tears as well.
"No more secrets. Okay?" Janet said in a shaky voice.
Sam nodded and they hugged each other. Sam lay her cheek on top of Janet's head and whispered, "I'm always here for you."
Janet whispered into Sam's blouse, "I know. And I'm so sorry. I never meant to keep anything from you. I just..."
Standing back, Sam looked at Janet, "Okay. No secrets? Then I have to tell you...I had a couple of drinks with Yolanda Reese today." Janet's smile disappeared and she looked over at the table near the front.
"She and I talked for a while. I understand why you did what you did. I also understand that it was a one-time thing..."
"Did she come on to you?"
Sam smiled at the suppressed anger and jealousy in Janet's voice. "No. She did say she was attracted to me but she'd never..." Sam looked at Janet then away.
"Janet, how do you feel? About me?"
Janet's head whipped around faster than Sam thought humanly possible. "What?!?"
"How do you..."
"I heard. I...just... I need to..."
Janet looked at their daughter and their new friends. "Let's get outta here. Go somewhere quieter, more private and talk. Okay?"
Sam nodded and walked back to their table with Janet. As they got near it, they heard laughter from the girls. "Xe must've told another story about the joys of dealing sports equipment in Vancouver," Sam said half to herself.
"Hey, Cass? Sam and I are going to... We're going to talk about some stuff. You can stick around here but listen to Jim and Krista, okay?"
Looking confused, Cassie nodded, "Sure, okay."
As Sam and Janet walked away, Cassie's face lit up and she whispered, "Alright!"
Outside of the room, Sam asked, "Where to?"
"Let's just walk."
Once outside of the building, they proceeded down the street talking quietly.
"Sam, I have wanted to say this... I'm scared that you'll..." Janet's voice trailed off.
"I love and value our friendship. I'm afraid I'll lose it."
"Janet, you are my best friend. Ever. Growing up, I never had some one this close to me, even my mother. The guys and I share a special bond but it's different. I can't talk to the colonel or Teal'c or Jonas about some of the things we talk about. I'm not going to let that go away.
"Whatever happens, I'm here for you. If you told me you had killed someone, I'd stand by you. If you told me you were a husband-bashing drunk when you were married, I'd stand by you."
Janet had to smile at that, "There were times..."
Sam smiled back. "You can tell me anything. Okay?"
Janet stopped under a streetlight, nodding. "Sam, I don't know how or even when or why... Well, I do know why."
Janet looked at the ground and sniffed, "I'm so scared to..."
Sam placed her hand on Janet's shoulder. "Please. Tell me." 'I need to hear it from you,' she added in her head. Since her conversation with Lannie earlier, her entire mindset had changed. Some things made much more sense than ever before.
"Sam, I love you. And...more than as a friend. I've...fallen in love with you."
"Janet...I know. I don't know what I think about it. Well, yes I do. I think I..."
Sam took Janet's shoulders and turned the doctor to look at her. "I think... I love you too. I'm not sure if this is good or... Hell, until a few hours ago, I didn't even know I felt this way. I mean, I didn't know that this was why I... Shit." Sam smiled and Janet returned it.
"Do we kiss now?"
Janet nodded and pulled Sam's face to hers. "I've wanted to do this for so long," she said before pressing her lips to Sam's.
Sam barely hesitated before returning the soft kiss. Her arms slid around Janet, pulling the petite woman to her. As their bodies moved together, Sam had another revelation - this was right. This was what she had wanted for so long.
The gentle kiss ended finally and Janet said, "I think we need to..."
"Well, at least out of this spotlight," Sam agreed looking up at the streetlight.
"Shall we go back to the room?"
Sam nodded, "Yes. But what do we do about Cassie?"
Janet reached into her purse and pulled out the cell, "Cassie? Sam and I won't be back to the dinner." Janet held the phone away from her ear as a loud 'Whoop!' erupted from the small speaker. Janet had a big grin on her face.
"Cass, please. Not in my ear." Janet's smile grew wider as she asked, "Whatever do you mean, dear? Who's around you now? Okay. And no, we're not going to be an afterschool special. Yes, but not to...alright, maybe a Lifetime movie. Cass, you are way too smart for your own good. Thanks. Love you too sweetie. I will. Talk to you tomorrow."
Janet slipped the small phone back into her bag and said, "She's pretty excited."
"About what?" Janet pursed her lips and looked at Sam. "O-oh! She knows? But I didn't even know... Stop looking at me like that!"
"She's very happy for us and she wanted me to tell you that she loves you. Then she..." Janet shook her head, a look of frustrated amusement on her face.
"Lemme guess, the afterschool special comment?"
"Uh-huh. She said she's now the kid with two mothers."
"Little wise... And Lifetime?"
"Well, ABC won't show stuff like that anymore - unless it's on 'NYPD Blue'..."
By this point they were outside the room. As Janet used her card to open the door, she said, "Sam, I do love you. And that means that nothing will happen...unless you want it to."
Sam smiled and took Janet's hand. "I'm not sure about anything sexual but...I know who I wanna be with. Ya know?"
Janet's cheeks dimpled as a huge grin formed. "I want to be with you too. For the rest of..."
"Our lives?"
Janet looked at Sam and nodded. "Please?"
"You never have to ask again."
Sitting on the beds facing each other, they talked. Janet told Sam about her first love and how it ended. Then about her mistake in marrying the Creep. Sam mainly listened, occasionally throwing in a question or some comment of support. Finally, as they got nearer the present, Sam had to know.
"When did you fall... When did you know you were in love with...me?" The last word was a whisper as if she was afraid to say it aloud and lose it.
"I noticed you from the first day I met you. But, I don't think it was until after we saved Cassandra that I started to see you as more than a friend and colleague. After you started spending a lot of your free time with us, I came to expect it.
"You know, it actually hurt when you'd get locked into some project and never even leave the mountain. I think I missed you more than Cass, especially as she got older."
"I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt either of you."
"I know, Sam."
"So, you've been in love for all this time and I never knew it. God, I must be stupid!"
"No. Never stupid. Sam, you are a brilliant, insightful person. And a wonderfully caring person as well. It was more a matter of hiding in plain sight."
"Yeah, well until I walked in on you two the other day, I had no idea you..."
"Played for the other team?" Janet laughed.
"Yeah. So are you gay or bi or what?"
"I guess I must be bi, if we need to label it. I've been with men. Not many but then again I haven't had that many lovers in the first place."
"Me neither."
Janet cocked her head slightly, "Must be why we're both so bad at this."
"I always knew you were beautiful Janet. And one of the most loving and caring people I've ever met. But I never saw you as sexual. Not until I saw your lovely little ass in bed..." Sam comically clapped her hand over her mouth. "I..."
"Lovely? Why thank you." Janet felt that if she moved over to sit with Sam, she could get the blonde into bed. She wasn't going to do that. It was up to Sam. If Sam wanted to go beyond talking, Janet would happily agree. But if the major wanted to just talk and be friends, Janet could live with that too. Just not as happily.
Sam crossed over and sat next to Janet, taking her hand. "Well, I know you could hit me with a 2x4 before I... Like how Jack feels about me."
"You have no idea how much that hurt when I was in the control room listening to him admit his feelings. I felt like such a coward..."
"Don't. I'm not sure how I would've responded back then anyway."
"Sam, I love you..." Janet paused.
"You know? I'm really getting to like the sound of that," Sam said. "I...love you too."
The space between them vanished and they were once again holding tightly to each other, their lips practically fused together. This time, Sam opened her mouth in invitation. Janet took advantage and slipped her tongue in to toy with Sam's.
Sam's calloused hand slid across the soft plains of Janet's bare back, feeling the hard muscles hidden beneath the pale flesh.
Janet's hands were caressing the silky material of Sam's blouse when one hand slid around to lightly cup one of her mounds.
Sam's pleased surprise puffed into Janet's mouth, followed by her tongue as she returned the heated kiss.
They fell sideways onto the bed, quietly maintaining the passionate kiss. When they finally parted, both were flushed and breathing rapidly.
"Wow. I have never kissed a woman before tonight and now...I wonder why I waited," Sam said with a smile.
"Sam, I..." Janet caressed Sam's cheek with the back of her hand, "That was one of the single best kisses I have ever experienced."
"Even better than Kim?"
Instead of answering, Janet pulled Sam to her once again. As they kissed, Sam fumbled with the spaghetti straps over Janet's shoulders, pulling the top down to feel the brunette's round, firm breasts.
Touching another breast for the first time, Sam was fascinated by the soft heat and the hard nipple. Her thumb lightly flicked back and forth across it as she began to ravage Janet's mouth.
Janet's hands pulled the blouse out of Sam's slacks and pushed up across the soft, muscle-hardened skin. Occasionally she'd feel the traces of old scars, her finger tip following the ridge from end to end.
Reaching the rear clasp on Sam's bra, Janet's nimble fingers opened it quickly. Then her hand slipped around to caress one of those magnificent globes she'd only held clinically before this moment.
She pulled away from the kiss which got a disappointed groan from Sam until she fastened her mouth on one of Sam's breasts.
"Oh, God, Janet..."
As she sucked on the hardened nipple between her lips, she undid the belt and the button at the top of Sam's slacks then forced her hand under the tight material. Her fingers combed through the wet mat of fur to discover the blonde's very wet core. One finger, then two slipped inside.
"OH MY GOD!"
Janet pulled back, her eyes feasting on the disheveled major before her. Sliding to the floor, she tugged at the black pants. "God, Sam, you look so hot in these pants..."
Gasping in excitement but enjoying the playfulness in Janet's tone, she asked, "But?"
Giggling like a school girl, Janet said, "But you look even hotter out of them..." With a savage pull, she got the pants and Sam's panties down below her hips. Finally pulling the pants down around Sam's knees, she slipped one leg then the other out of the black material.
Looking up at Sam's matted mound, she combed her fingers through the wet curls, lifting and fluffing them playfully. Meanwhile, her mouth neared her goal.
Feeling Janet's warm breath on her wet flesh, Sam groaned again. The groan became a squeal when Janet blew on the puffy outer lips and then between them.
Her tongue quickly parted those lips and she began to feast on her best friend, her love, her new lover.
Sam looked down her body, smoothing down the open, rumpled blouse, to see Janet's eyes staring up at her over her blonde pubic thatch. Those eyes twinkled as the doctor explored her most private treasure with her tongue.
Sam's flavor was intoxicating. Janet's memories of her few other female lovers came to the fore and none of them could compare. The small part of her mind that was still rational knew that this was probably a opinion distorted by her longtime desire to be with the beautiful blonde.
Then, the more primal part of her brain overwhelmed her and all she cared about was the hot, wet flesh in her mouth and around her tongue. She thrust into the buttery darkness of Sam's sex as her nose teased the hard clit just peaking out of it's hood.
Sam's hips began to thrust and gyrate as she neared her release. When the tip of Janet's tongue homed in on the little bundle of nerves deep inside her, she screamed as her consciousness disappeared in a white hot ball of pleasure.
When Janet touched Sam's g-spot, she knew that was all it would take and held on as the blonde thrashed about. The woman actually released a small amount of nectar beyond what Janet was used to. The doctor happily lapped it up.
After Sam's orgasm waned, Janet crawled up next to her and held the woman, kissing her sweat-dampened head and face gently. Sam opened her eyes slowly and smiled at her friend.
"God," she whispered. "If only I'd known years ago..."
Janet smiled sweetly as she replied, "No matter. We have now."
"And the future," Sam added.
They lay together quietly. Janet looked over Sam's shoulder at the mirror. What she saw was lovely and erotic. Sam nude from the waist down and her blouse open and bundled around her shoulders. Janet herself was bare from the waist up, her dress gathered around her hips and loose strands of hair falling around her face.
Sam whispered, "I want you. But you'll have to teach me."
Janet smiled at her love, "It'll be my pleasure."
The training started and went on far past midnight.

"Yesterday, when I had drinks with Lannie, she...told me about when you two... I got jealous. I didn't understand that then but now...
"But there was more I didn't mention earlier. She told me you loved me."
Janet sat up, her naked body gleaming from their sexual play. "What?"
"Janet, don't be angry. If she hadn't said anything about that, I don't know if...
"And there's one more thing. I told Lannie that what someone is doesn't matter to me. Well, I lied. When it comes to you, it does. I guess I was jealous and didn't even know it."
"So we both screwed up. Sorta. Maybe we should start all over again?" Janet suggested, cocking her eyebrow suggestively.
Sam nodded and stuck out her hand, "Hi, I'm Captain Samantha Carter. Welcome to the SGC."
"Goof," Janet smiled and lightly slapped Sam's arm before snuggling under it.
They stayed in bed long into the next morning but neither one of them got much sleep.
Just like Janet had predicted...

Epilogue
Sam and Janet left the room and met with their daughter for a late lunch and then spent the rest of the day together. They told Cassie that they were now a family in all but name. Cassie was delighted.
"You moving in then?"
"If your mom will have me," Sam replied.
"I think I might be able to deal with that," Janet snickered.
Later, at the charity auction, Cassie was outbid on the uniform jacket and later an alien weapon. But they all had fun watching the various celebrities prancing around, trying to get the bids as high as possible.
Michelle Charters was the highlight, at least as far as Sam and Janet were concerned. But Janet still didn't see the resemblance.
Cassie didn't go away empty handed. Michelle found her and told her she had won the silent auction for a free tour of the sets at Bridge Studios the following Monday. Fortunately their return flight wasn't until Tuesday and the three went to see where "Wormhole X-treme" was made.
An added bonus was Lannie Reese taking the time to act as tour guide during a break in shooting. Cassie was thrilled to be photographed in the control center, the officer's meeting room and the electronics lab.
In addition, she received a copy of an upcoming script signed by the cast. There was the sole condition that she not give away any spoilers.
Towards the end, Lannie took the adults aside, "Looks like things are going well with you."
Sam nodded, "Thanks to you." Janet nodded her agreement.
"Good luck to you both." Lannie hugged each of them then added, "But I don't think you'll need it."
The End.
