Summary: Rodney thinks the side effects of the enzyme is finally over, and folks can stop looking at him like a freak
He never really liked mornings before, but then again, he never had John Sheppard in his bed to wake up to, now did he? John was a morning person by default, as he explained it.
"You can't serve as long as I have in the military and NOT become a morning person," he had explained in between kisses down Rodney's back, while trying to wake his sleepy lover with the temptation of hot morning sex...it worked. Now, every morning for the past two weeks had been perfect and utterly hot, except this one; John was not there when he woke up and this distressed him more than he could really admit for it felt as if some part of him was missing.
Rodney sat up and looked around and to his relief or annoyance, he was not sure which yet, he spotted a note weighted down by a chocolate chip power bar. "Bribery won't cut it," he snarled to the air as he snatched both the note and the bar up and began to read the note.
Sorry Love,
Loren's team missed another check in and Elizabeth called for a rescue. Since you're not cleared for gate travel as of yet, and looked so adorable all snuggled in I didn't have the heart to wake you. I'm hoping to be back before you do wake up, but in case I'm running late, here is a power bar to start your day. Wish it was a kiss, but it's all I can manage until later.
Love, John
Rodney knew he had a stupid silly grin on his face, but he couldn't help it. John Sheppard loved him! Oh, not that he didn't know that by now, but to leave a note...no other lover had ever done that for him. Then again, no other lover actually LOVED him, and it showed more and more in everything John did, including this dumb...not so dumb note. Rodney carefully folded the note and shifted until he was sitting on the edge of the bed. He opened the nightstand draw and pulled out a small book; his journal. Doctor Kate Heightmeyer had suggested he keep one and NOT on his lap top, to give him some personal time away from technology to help focus his thoughts. He'd let it lax a bit over their time at Atlantis, but he'd kept it up enough to be able to see how he'd changed his perspectives on things over the year and half they'd been there. He slipped the note in the back and put the book away, mentally making a note to write an entry later. He had to get up...lots of work today.
Rodney got up and went about his morning routine, starting by reaching for the Raybands John had given him to hide his black/blue eyes. They seemed to freak folks out. He put them on as he went to take his shower though he didn't wear them when he actually showered. It was almost second nature to wear them because he didn't appreciate the looks either, even if his lover found it cool. Once out of the shower, he put them back on immediately and finished getting dressed before heading to his lab via the control room.
"Elizabeth," he said once he saw her and noticed she looked tense along with everyone one in the control room. "What's wrong?"
"Colonel Sheppard left to find out what happened to Major Loren's team over two hours ago, and we have not been able to make contact with them," Weir explained to her chief science officer and friend, knowing he'd be concerned for John and the rest of his team.
"Have you sent a MALP through?" Rodney asked instantly, his brain already engaging
"Of course," Elizabeth replied, a bit irritated that Rodney would think she'd overlook something so basic. "But we can't get a clear transmission from it."
Rodney moved immediately to the control panel and started working it like it was his piano, with perfect precision and unknowing artistry as he brought up the last attempted transmission from the MALP. "Whatever is causing the interference is probably interfering with Colonel and the Major from contacting us," he said, his tone even, though his heart was filled with worry. No, it's more than worry, as this was the first time John had been off-world since he was released from the infirmary, and it was suddenly more evident that a part of him was missing and he needed to get it back. "I'm going to reroute some power and boost the signal...dial the gate," he ordered, not concerned that they wouldn't listen to him.
In moments, Rodney was underneath the panel pulling wires, switching crystals as if he had done this a thousand times...which he had. "Try it now," he called out.
"Atlantis to Colonel Sheppard," Elizabeth called out, hoping to get a reply. She waited a few seconds. "Atlantis to Colonel Sheppard, do you read me?" She stepped back and looked down at the anxious face of Rodney who was still on his back looking up and shook her head no.
"Grrrr," Rodney snarled and shifted back under the panel and worked more of his magic. "Try now!"
"Atlantis to Colonel Sheppard," Elizabeth tried again, and once more waited with baited breath.
"...Sheppard....read...all..." was the static filled and broken reply.
Rodney didn't know why but just hearing John's voice, he felt a bolt of relief fill him. It was almost like he could tell that John was alright, just frustrated over something, but he couldn't tell what. "Keep trying," he told Elizabeth and scooted out from under the panel. He got up and moved to another panel and worked that one just as proficiently. A few mummers filled the room as the lights dimmed. "Again," he ordered, looking at Weir.
"Colonel Sheppard, this is Atlantis, do you read me?" she said again.
"Yes, we can read you," John's voice replied, clear this time. "Something around here is making communications next to impossible. I've found Loren and his team, they're well and we're all heading back to the gate. Other than some wild fruits and possible edible plants, this planet is a blank."
"I understand. I'm glad all is well. What's your ETA?" Weir asked.
"Another twenty-thirty minutes at most," John replied.
"You need to wrap it up, I can't maintain this level of power much longer," Rodney stated firmly.
"We'll see you then, Colonel, Weir out," she stated and closed the channel and the gate.
Rodney turned quickly and undid whatever he had done and the lights returned to normal and he gave a small sigh. "Glad nothing blew up," he said, relieved it had worked.
"Was that a significant amount of power?" Weir asked, for she was learning to read between the grips and complaints that was a part of Rodney McKay's communication.
"Well, I doubt anyone had to go without their hair dryers and Playstations, but it was significant enough that had it been much longer, it could have fried the circuits and probably me along with it. Being electrocuted isn't on my top ten list of things to do today, in fact it's not on any list....well, perhaps my top ten list of ways I don't want to die..." Rodney started to ramble.
"Thank you, Rodney," Weir said, in hopes of cutting Rodney off of his rant.
"Ah...yes, sure...you're welcome," Rodney said and moved to put the circuitry back to the way it should be. By the time he was finished and was considering going to the commissary, the gate began to rotate and open and incoming wormhole.
"It's Colonel Sheppard," the technician stated
Rodney moved to the steps where Weir was waiting as well, and watched as the two teams came through safe and sound for a change. "Welcome back," Elizabeth greeted them, the relief clear in her voice.
"Sorry, Doctor Weir," Major Loren said, as he looked up and saw the worry in many of their faces. "We didn't realize that the radios weren't working until we were a significant distance away. We headed back once it became apparent," he began to explain.
"It's alright, Major, you can fill me in later during the debriefing. I'm just glad everyone is okay. Check in with Doctor Beckett and we'll debrief in one hour," she stated with a warm smile then headed off to finish with the rest of her work that morning. The day had been a rarity...everyone was safe, sound and home.
John lingered behind as the rest of his team and that of Major Loren's headed off to get their post-mission physicals. "Morning," he greeted casually, but the twinkle in his eyes didn't hide a thing as they smiled for Rodney.
"I see you've already had your cup of morning heroics," Rodney replied, turning to walk John to the infirmary.
"Oh, don't be like that," John smirked, finding Rodney's snark amusing as always. "I went to do my job and look..." he holds out his arms and does a small twirl, then continues walking. "Not a scratch on me."
"I see, probably used all your gate karma for the next two weeks," Rodney replied, still a touch irritated, but only slightly because John was right, he was safe and here.
"Gate karma?" John arched a brow, an amused smirk filled his face. "Why Rodney McKay are YOU admitting to believing in karma? A NON-scientific belief?"
Before Rodney could reply, two members of the science department turned the corner and were about to head down towards them. One of them, a woman, nudged the other and both looked up at Rodney, then shifted as close to the wall as they could.. They let him and Sheppard by, looking afraid and unsure, and said nothing when Sheppard greeted them with a hello.
John watched as the two scientists moved off as quickly as they could. He was tempted to go after them and give them a piece of his mind. He turned to his lover and though he wore the sunglasses, he could still see the little lines Rodney got when he was frowning or upset. "Has that been happening a lot?" he asked, for though he tried, he couldn't be with Rodney 24/7 and had to let the man do his job as he had to do his own.
"Define a lot?" Rodney replied, his attempt to deflect poor, which in itself was an indication that it really bothered him.
"Rodney..." John said, wanting the truth and his love to talk to him.
"Look, John, I figure I have trouble dealing with the eyes and the way I...behaved while stoned high on the wraith enzyme, it stands to reason they would too..." Rodney tried to reason.
"Rodney, it's been two weeks," John said, placing a comforting hand on his love's arm. Then making a decision, he grabbed firmly but not hard and guided them into a side room, which thankfully was unoccupied and mentally locked the door. "Talk to me," he said softly, pulling Rodney to him and gave him a hug. He knew Rodney was a strong man, but everyone needed someone to be strong and caring for them once in a while and he was grateful Rodney would let him be there for him.
Rodney sighed, "It's really not so bad. I mean, I've was treated much worse in High School after I had the nerve to ask the head cheerleader, Becky Sue Anderson to the Homecoming dance..."
John couldn't help the grin he now sported, "wait, you...you asked the head CHEERLEADER to the Homecoming dance? My word, McKay, I knew you had balls..." he laughed and was glad to see Rodney did too.
"I didn't actually expect her to say yes, but Brian Murphy, my only competition in High school, and him a senior at that..."
"Wait...just how old were you both?" John inquired.
"Oh, she was a senior and I was a freshmen," Rodney smirked, feeling proud of himself as he relayed this information to his lover. "Anyway, it was some kind of a dare...and you know how it goes..." he shrugged.
John saw the proud smile falter and so deeply wanted to put it back on his lover's face, but knew they needed to finish with this story and the subject at hand. "What happened?" he asked, feeling he already knew.
"Oh, well, her boyfriend, Captain of the Football team of course, objected."
"Of course," John nodded.
"Anyway, he didn't appreciate it and let it be known," Rodney said, attempting to pull away, but John held him close and firmly to his body. Rodney gave in and accepted the embrace and found it soothing as he rested his head on John's shoulder.
"He beat you up?" John asked, needing clarification.
"That, and I learned how to open lockers from the inside. Me and Houdini have a lot in common when it comes to getting out of locked boxes," Rodney snickered, but the sad truth of his existence of that time laced his words.
John wanted to say he was sorry, but platitudes never really served anyone, and besides, that was then this was now. He rubbed his lover's back and kissed his temple. "What about now? No one's tried to hurt you have they?" he asked, knowing if someone did they'd have him to face.
"No...no," Rodney replied sincerely as he lifted his head and met John's eyes so he could see it was true. "They just ignore me, keep their distance...I frighten them...hell, I frightened myself," Rodney said, reaching up to wipe his eyes, his right hand removing the glasses so he could do so.
"I know, but it wasn't really you..." John tried to say, having tried to explain this to his lover before and though he didn't care for shrinks or head doctors, he was glad Rodney was seeing Heightmeyer to help him work some of this out.
"You don't get it, do you," Rodney snapped, glaring at John. "I was high, and I was not thinking clear, but NOTHING made me choose what I did...it was a...a power trip...I could have..."
"NO," John said firmly. "You didn't hurt anyone but the Wraith, you're a good man, Rodney McKay and the man I love and DON'T you forget that," John snapped in return, then gentled his tone, and caressed Rodney's face. "You were focused on saving me and the team...that's what you did. Stop belittling it, I don't think I would have survived what they had planned for me, nor can I take seeing the man I love suffer over saving my life."
"Sorry," Rodney whispered, bowing his head.
"Hey, nothing to be sorry for," John smiled lovingly, tipping Rodney's head up with a finger on his chin. His eyes went wide as he grinned ear-to-ear. "They're blue!"
"Huh?" Rodney asked not following John's comment.
"Your eyes...they're blue...normal I mean," he grinned.
"What?" Rodney asked, and looked for a mirror but there was none to be found. "Are you sure?"
"Rodney, I wouldn't lie about this or anything," John replied, shrugging off the slight hurt at the though Rodney may think so, but then sees, Rodney is not thinking of him, just not able to believe what he's hearing and doubted the reality not John himself. "Come on," he said and guided Rodney out the door as they headed to the infirmary. He knew Beckett would confirm that Rodney's eyes were normal and, as predicted, all side affects of the enzyme were finally gone.

Rodney was thrilled, for he was finally cleared for gate travel, and with much 'persuasion' he convinced Elizabeth to let his team go on a mission the next day. So here they sat at the briefing, noticing a few looks as folks were starting to realize his eyes were back to normal and most of the 'flinching' seemed to have lessened, which made him happy.
"Look, all I'm saying is, that as 'nice' as those bunch of rocks look, so far we haven't located anything of use among them," Rodney pointed out, not seeing why anyone couldn't see his point. "At least on P7X-388 there was signs of life and perhaps some technology they've totally forgotten about and maybe wouldn't care if we took it," he finished, believing he'd made his point significantly....he should have known better.
"The ruins on P8X-983 could have ancient writing, they may be a lead to something," John protested. "And lets face it, we've been out of the loop a bit, a nice...quiet mission would be better..."
"I am perfectly capable of handling myself," Rodney snapped, finally seeing what was behind this absurdity. "I've also been cleared to go through the gate, which means I can do my job, which I may remind you is NOT playing with ROCKS!"
"Gentlemen," Weir interjected, wanting to nip this in the bud. Glad they listened to her and stopped, she continued. She turned to Teyla, knowing she'd provide some wise counsel. "What do you know of the people on the planet Rodney is suggesting?"
"Very little, I am afraid," Teyla replied calmly. "I only know that the Tellosions, who we have traded successfully to date, had suggested it. But I would like to point out, that though I understand Colonel Sheppard's concerns," she nodded in John's direction, "I also see Doctor McKay's as well. New allies and information are very important, and it is my suggestion we continue to make trading partners, for one never knows when the supplies brought to you from Earth may become cut off."
Everyone murmured their agreement, though John did it reluctantly, he could see he was out voted here, even if the wasn't a democracy. "I guess P7X-388 it is then," he replied, trying not to sulk, Air Force Colonels don't sulk, but he didn't like the idea of Rodney jumping back into the mix so fast. Apparently Rodney had other ideas and he was backed by the rest, so he'd go along. Didn't mean he was going to let McKay out of his sight for one minute...not one damn minute!
"Very well, you have a go in one hour," Weir stated and everyone acknowledged it and they were all heading out, except Rodney. She was glad to have things back to normal as she gathered her laptop, which was used instead of folder, and noticed Rodney hovering near the door, now closed. "Rodney?" she asked, not even aware that she took a defensive position with the table between them.
"I ah...well..." Rodney felt tongue tied, but knew what he had to say. "I probably should have said this weeks ago, but..." he bowed his head, not sure what to say, but pressed on. "I'm sorry about the whole..." he gestured toward Elizabeth, "you know. I'm sorry I hurt you," he finally said, looking up tentatively at her.
Weir really hadn't expect anything from Rodney since nothing was forth coming that first week, and felt it was best to leave it behind. Now she was glad to hear the words. "I think it was best you waited so long," she replied honestly. "I was angry with you, even if logically I knew you were being influenced, I...well, I wasn't ready to forgive you so easily," she added.
"And now?" Rodney asked, suddenly holding his breath. "I really didn't mean to hurt you...I..."
"It's okay, Rodney, really," Elizabeth said gently, her eyes warm as she spoke. "I have forgiven you and have come to really understand that you didn't meant to hurt me or anyone but those who would do you or your team deadly harm."
"Ah...um..." Rodney smiled a little, grateful that Elizabeth was able to forgive him, considering the nasty marks he'd left on her throat, when he'd nearly choked her. "So...we're good?" he asked, for though the two of them were not best of friends, like Carson and Radek were, they were still good friends and Rodney never had so many good friends before, he never wanted to lose one...ever.
Elizabeth smiled, "Yes, we're good."
"Good....good, I should, ah...get ready to leave," Rodney stammered, though he was smiling and headed out the door.
Elizabeth Weir grinned herself, wondering how she could be afraid of Rodney McKay. Even high on an powerful alien enzyme that gave the user serious power trips, all Rodney McKay wanted to do was save his team...that really had to say something about the man, if nothing else did; he was a good man.
***
Not quite two hours later the Stargate activated with Sheppard's IDC and Weir called Beckett out of habit, for it usually meant someone was hurt. As the shield was lowered and the signal to cross given, she watched moments later as Sheppard's team came back, all covered in what looked like...rotten vegetables? "Colonel?" was all she asked, it was apparently enough to set Rodney off.
"This was all your fault, Colonel!" Rodney snarled, wiping what looked like rotten tomato off his face. "I told you to back off, but would you listen....NO! The great and powerful Sheppard knows and sees all...all but the fact you were insulting the Chief's daughter!"
"Hey, how was I supposed to know, besides, it's not like she was an innocent...hell, she grabbed your..." Sheppard started.
"HEY!" McKay interjected, not wanting that aspect of the mission all over the city. He heard the other two snicker, or to be precise, Ronon snickered, Teyla gave an amused smile. "You all didn't find it funny when they decided we were infected with 'bad spirits' and pelted us with their garbage," Rodney retorted.
"I take it things didn't go well," Elizabeth said, trying to hide her own smirk, after hearing some of what occurred on the planet.
"Oh, they went swimmingly if you're interested in collecting rotten vegetables, but with your cooking I doubt anyone would know," Rodney zipped off before thinking as usual.
"Rodney," John chastised immediately, seeing the hurt flash in Weir's eyes. "That was uncalled for."
Rodney stopped wiping the garbage off him and stopped to think what his mouth had said, and had the decency to blush from embarrassment. "I'm sorry, Elizabeth, that was uncalled for. And for the record, your cooking isn't half as bad as I was making it out to be," he added, as a way of apology.
Weir knew for Rodney that was a pretty good apology, but it still stung a bit to hear what he though of her cooking. Sure she was no gourmet but she didn't burn water either. If she learned anything in her time here, was how to deal with Rodney McKay. "Thank you, Rodney. I appreciate it. And to show you no hard feelings, I'll cook you dinner Friday night," she smiled, looking as innocently as she could manage.
"Um...ah...." Rodney nodded with a slight whimper, as he bit his tongue, for he could say many things, but he learned that it wasn't always good to let his mouth run amok.
"Why don't you all get showered and changed, then see Doctor Beckett. We'll debrief in two hours," she told them and headed back up the stairs as they smelled terrible.
"Come on," John said, gently taking Rodney by the elbow, but Rodney pulled away, causing John to look back and stare at him, startled.
"I haven't changed my mind, this was all YOUR fault," Rodney snapped, and marched off with as much dignity as he could pull off covered in garbage. He was followed by the others, who didn't look too pleased with their leader either.
John sighed, he knew he had overdone the 'keep-Rodney-safe' thing. Technically this was their first mission with them as full-fledged lovers and seeing that...that harlot, putting the moves on HIS man... John closed his eyes and took a calming breath and headed off to get cleaned up. He knew he had a lot to make up, not only to his team, for they suffered for his lack of professionalism but Rodney too. He should have not been jealous and let Rodney handle it or offer assistance and let Rodney decide if it was needed...yep, a lot to make up.
***
It was late but not too late, as Rodney entered his quarters, torn between wanting to remain mad at John for the stunt he pulled on the planet and going to find him and make love to him. After the debriefing Rodney went to his lab and spent more time going over the events on the planet then the job before him and realized that John had been acting jealous. He never had anyone act jealous over him before and he found it rather flattering, but seeing how it played out, realized it wasn't something that could continue if they were going to work together.
Rodney kicked off his shoes and flopped back on his bed. He was debating if he should call John when the lights in the room dimmed, music popped on and the center of his thoughts eased into the bedroom from the bathroom. John was simply dressed in a long half buttoned white shirt, his silver dog tags hanging from his neck, and a bottle in one hand and two glasses in another. He had a predatory smile that sent shivers up and down Rodney's spine. "What's the occasion?" Rodney asked, not really caring, his lover was before him, desiring him, and that was all that mattered in the long run he realized.
"Oh, no occasion, just an apology for being a jerk on the last mission," John said as he walked in, and stepped up onto the bed, and walked over careful of his stepping, and above his lover, "If you'll accept my apology?" he grinned.
Rodney swallowed hard, for it turned out that the long white half buttoned shirt was 'all' John was wearing. "Well, I might," he said, managing to keep his voice even, as his strong hands caressed up the firm calves up to lean muscular thighs of the man that stood over him. "Though I may need some persuasion," he purred, letting his fingers trace the strong hipbones of his lover.
"Oh, I think that can be arranged," John leered as he eased himself down, now straddling Rodney and sitting on his legs. He then slowly poured the drink, having opened the bottle earlier, and then handed a glass over to Rodney. Then he poured one for himself before he placed the bottle aside. "To forgiveness and understanding," he toasted, then clinked his glass to Rodney's and then gulped the drink down, his hazel eyes never leaving the bright blue one's before him. He watched as Rodney drank his drink, and when he finished it, he snatched the glass from his hand and tossed them both aside and lunged forward on his lover, rubbing his body up and down as he nuzzled and kissed the soft skin beneath him.
"Oh Colonel, I get the distinct impression that you want something," Rodney groaned out with a smile, all thoughts of the mess up on the mission forgotten.
John rubbed his hot groin against the hardening one beneath him, "This is what I want," he purred, his hazel eyes going black with desire.
Rodney closed his eyes for the sensation felt so wonderful, his lover could melt his body in mere seconds, he was that good. "Anywhere in particular you want that?" he asked in his teasing voice, the one he knew drove John even crazier with desire.
John's mouth was on hyper drive, licking, sucking, nipping all over Rodney's neck, chest, and under his ear, "Yesss," he hissed, "In me...now!"
Rodney opened his eyes wide at the order, and from the playfulness in John's eyes and the tone of voice knew the game was afoot; in a moment he had John on his back, "I do believe we have forgotten who is in really in charge here?" he said, his voice light, his eyes bright with love for his lover.
"Oh...I doubt that," John taunted, still rubbing himself against Rodney's body, while his hands were removing the barrier of clothing between them, "Perhaps you'll just have to admit..."
Rodney growled at the challenge more than willing to play this game with John, and ripped the shirt off John's body, "Perhaps I will have to remind you the old fashion way!" He reached in between his lover's legs and wasn't surprised to find he was already prepared and that just made everything John had been doing all that much more hotter.
"Oh, please, remind me," John gasped, seeing the fiery passion in his lover's eyes. Feeling the strong hands grab his hips and the firm hard erection pushing against his tightness, he groaned in delight, then he shouted, "Yes!" as he felt himself being filled with his lover's fiery heat and his body arched into the motion. His breathing was fast and shallow, and his lover would soon start moving, he couldn't wait; but he knew he would have to unless he asked for it and he would. "Please, Rodney...please," he begged.
"Please what?" Rodney asked, barely able to contain the fire in his cock, he wanted to pound into John's body so badly it hurt; but he would wait, John had to ask for it...it was part of the game, and both enjoyed it.
"Take me, fuck me, make me yours, claim me," John shouted in a string of pleading words, the need heavy upon him.
"Which one?" Rodney asked with a tiny shift of his hips.
"All of them, any of them...please," John asked, having felt the shimmer of delight from Rodney's shift. "Oh, you feel so good," he groaned.
Not able to hold back any further he started moving within his lover's body, thrusting in and out, first slow, but that didn't last long as it built in passion and need with each movement for both of them. Seeing John whimpering under his touch, his lightly tanned skin glistening from sweat, his face flushed, his lips open and moist, his eyes black with fire...all for him, it made John beautiful and he fell in love with his him all over again. "Mine," he cried as his body exploded in a sizzling heat that only his lover...mate had ever been able to bring out of him, while feeling the same fire spurt forth from his lover's body as he heard the word, "yours' echo his.
Rodney always made sure he fell to his side after an intense orgasm, so not to bear to much weight on John. He lay there holding John to him, more than sated with this fast and furious love making, but he felt it...deep down inside he felt the change. This was more of a union than anything else that had been between them over the last few weeks. It truly felt like a claiming, that John really was his mate and he John's. The thought thrilled him and strengthened him like no other.
"So, am I forgiven," John chuckled warmly, still heaving his breath.
Rodney laughed, "You were forgiven a long time ago, but don't ever let it be said that I'll turn down make-up sex when offered," he smirked.
John laughed, then gave a happy sigh as he turned and curled up to his lover. "I meant what I said," he told Rodney, meeting his eyes with a deep sincerity. "I am yours."
Rodney forgot how to breathe for a moment as he saw the love and devotion burning in John's eyes for him. Burning in his lungs reminded him how to breathe and he pulled John to him and kissed him deeply and passionately. "I'm yours as well," he panted, a huge grin on his face.
John matched the silly grin on his own face then his eyes grew sad and remorseful as he caressed Rodney's face. "I really am sorry about how I acted. It was unprofessional and out there..." he bowed his head. "There was no room for jealousy."
Rodney lifted John's head so he could see John's eyes, "You're right, you were unprofessional and to be honest, not so long ago, I did the same thing...Chaya?" he said knowingly. "I didn't realize how jealous I was, I just masked it with other things to cover my actions. But I was jealous and I almost lost you as a friend and more. It was a tough wake up call for me, and even though I didn't think this could really happen," he gestured between them, "I didn't want to lose what little I did have with you, so I learned to deal with it. I trust you to do the same," he added tenderly, and leaned in and placed a loving kiss on John's lips.
"Thank you," John said softly, touched by the faith Rodney was showing in him and the depth of his understanding, which really shouldn't surprise him. He's seen just how deep and passionate Rodney McKay really was and it was part of what made him fall in love with the man. "Though I think we should talk about a few things, get some things worked out so we know better how to approach such things in the future, sound good?"
"Yes, especially with your natural Captain Kirk mentality, even if you ARE off the market," Rodney told him firmly, the smirk removing any sting to the words.
Sheppard chuckled, seeing the teasing for what it was. "And lets not forget, you're not on any market either, Mr. God's gift to geniuses."
Though they both laughed, the truth burned bright in both their eyes and then they sealed it with a tender kiss that shifted easily to slow gentle love making, forging the bond between them even deeper.
***
The next mission was to the ruins on P8X-983, and as John had hoped for it had been quiet and without incident, though Rodney had been correct too, there was nothing of any real interest to find, unless you were an archeologist. But it gave him and his team twenty-four hours of peace and bonding which he felt they needed. None of them really had discussed what happened with Ford and the others, so it was cleansing to finally get it out in the open and he was sure also served to bring them closer.
Weir had decided not to push her flag team as she thought of them, and gave them some down time to get back into the swing of things, though they would be on standby should they be needed. That meant John, Teyla, and Ronon were working with the new Marines and those that were slated for hand to hand combat training if they wanted through the gate. Rodney was in his lab, raining down his own brand of ternary that no one would really want to be with out. She was a bit surprised to look up and see John Sheppard sauntering his way toward her, a lazy smile on his face, having no signs that he had been sparing as she had mentally predicted. "Colonel," she greeted professionally as they were surrounded by some new and old members of their team.
"Doctor Weir," John smirked, amused by the formality considering how much they've all gone through. "Can I talk to you a moment."
"Sure," she said and headed to her office. She let John mentally close the doors behind him. "What can I do for you, John?"
"Just your understanding and acceptance," John said evenly, though only his eyes gave any hint of his nervousness. He and Rodney had talked and he was elected to be the spokesperson, and so here he was.
"Okay," Elizabeth said, taking a seat and waited to hear what was on John's mind.
"First off, I may have over looked an apology, about the second to last mission," John said, trying not to shift in his seat, and keep his cool appearance.
"Oh, what for?" Weir asked, for she had not heard any reason that pointed to one being needed.
"Ah, well, you see, there was something more going on, which you didn't know," John explained. Seeing Elizabeth sit up straighter, wondering what was being kept from her, he sat up straighter too. "I'll be blunt," he started to say.
"I would appreciate that," Weir replied, evenly.
"The whole incident happened because I was jealous over that woman making a move on my boyfriend," he stated quickly.
Elizabeth blinked a few times and looked blankly at John, "I'm sorry, but could you repeat that?"
"The whole incident happened because I was jealous over that woman making a move on my boyfriend...Rodney," John repeated and waited for the fall out, but saw Weir was still processing what was being said. "We've talked and we've worked things out, so it won't be happening again..."
"Wait...you caused a diplomatic incident which could very well have turned deadly over...over...over some woman hitting on...your boyfriend?" Weir asked, her voice raising just slightly.
"Okay, this isn't going over well," John said to himself, and now realized why Rodney begged off being here. "Look, Elizabeth, I know we should have told you sooner...but..."
"You're damn right you should have told me sooner," Elizabeth snapped, angry at what she was only now finding out and what could have happened. "I wouldn't have let you both go on that mission..."
"Now wait just one moment," John interjected. "We made a mistake and we both know it could have been a bad one, but we've learned from it. But we're both in agreement that we want to be on the same team..."
"That's not up to you," Weir snapped back in reply.
"You're not going to tell me you of all people have a problem with gays, are you?" John asked, surprised by what he was hearing.
"Hardly," Elizabeth replied with restrained anger. "I DO have a problem with those in a relationship serving on the same team. Had I known I would have switched Rodney to another team..."
"He doesn't want to be on another team and I don't want another scientist...he's the best, and as I said, we worked it out," John replied firmly. "And for the record, though I consult you and respect your opinion, you do NOT have say as to who is on my team."
Weir narrowed her eye and met John's gaze head on. "I may not have say over the military personnel you chose to take with you through the gate, but I DO have say over the civilians and that includes McKay. And I warn you now, John, don't push me on this matter," she growled.
"Or what?" John asked, really wanting to know how far Weir was willing to go on this one.
"Or I'll send him back to Earth," she replied coolly.
John stood up slowly, his eyes dark with anger, this conversation not going anywhere near how he had pictured. "You do, and you find yourself with Caldwell, because I'll resign and go back with him," he replied evenly and left, not giving Elizabeth a chance to answer.
John was furious as he stormed out of Weir's office, needing not only to cool off but to find Rodney and let him know they had a problem. He knew she could have threatened more than just sending Rodney back to Earth, she could have threatened his career, which of course he'd have resigned on the spot, but she threatened Rodney, which was in his book even a bigger mistake.
Suddenly he was in the lab and found Zelenka but no Rodney. "Where's McKay?" he asked, really needing to speak with him.
"Southern Pier, working on one of the power stations there," Zelenka replied over his shoulder and turned only in time to see John's back, then shrugged and went back to work.
John hit the transporter and within moments was on the south side and with the help of Atlantis herself, found the power station in question along with the team of scientist cum city repair men/women. "McKay," he called out, his tone as professional as he could make it.
"Not now, Colonel," Rodney said as he was on his back under a panel with two other people whose names he couldn't remember, but at least could hand him the right tools when asked for.
"He's rerouting power from this station to the others, so we can make repairs," Doctor Simpson explained, seeing John was on edge and would have to wait. "Coffee?" she offered, for the team brought a large picnic basket of snacks as it was a distance out here and all knew that coffee and food was the best way to tame their shrew.
John didn't want to wait, but he also knew that what Rodney did for Atlantis was very important and could afford to wait a few minutes. "Sure," he said, accepting the cup and leaned back on a blank wall, being sure not to touch anything, having been on the wrong end of Rodney's temper before and now was NOT the time for one of those, considering what he needed to discus with him.
Doctor Simpson was pouring a cup for herself when there was a loud crackle and even a louder pop. Shouts and screams filled the air as a thick huge power coil burst from the wall and whipped around wildly the electricity sparking from it and zapping all it touched.
"WILLIAMS!" someone shouted.
Rodney scrambled out from under the panel and saw the chaos before him. The thick cable was lose and had struck Doctor Williams who was laying on the ground, but no one was able to get to him or the other two people precariously trapped by the dangerous power wire. "Don't move," he shouted to John and Lisa Simpson, and headed back under the panel only to jump back when it shorted out on him, causing some minor burns on his hands.
"RODNEY!" John shouted with fear, more for his lover than himself.
"DON'T MOVE, DAMN IT!" Rodney shouted back, folding his hands to his chest to protect them, his fear for those hurt overtook any pain he was feeling. "Call Zelenka see if he can turn off the power," Rodney ordered, as he watched the whipping power cord brush dangerously close to John, it's insulated body causing no harm in itself, but not providing enough protection for anyone to dare grab it and live, as it was, he feared for Williams who was struck by the high-powered cable.
Seconds felt like hours, "Why isn't the power off?" Rodney demanded, unable to use his own radio at the moment as his hands had begun to throb and his head began to hurt.
"He's trying," one of the others said, and gave a scream as the power wire seemed to leap in the air like a hopping snake and just missed hitting Williams again, but this time it was not whipping toward John and Lisa.
"NO!" Rodney shouted in fear and suddenly the power cable was flung back toward the wall it came from and held there squirming, as if some invisible wall was holding it.
"Get him down the hall," John ordered the two scientists, Rogers and Wilks, pointing to Williams. He wanted everyone out of harm's way in case the cable came back toward them. He and Simpson moved to get Rodney and John noticed the darkness in Rodney's eyes and his focus on the cable. "Rodney?" he called out.
The moment Rodney blinked and looked at him, the power cable was free and mad, whipping around once more, but this time, there was no one to strike its anger on. John pulled Rodney, followed closely by Simpson down the hall, where he saw the medical team arriving.
"Doctor McKay, are you alright?" Lisa Simpson asked, noticing the burns on Rodney's hands.
"Um....no, I think I burned myself," Rodney said, but his usual gusto in his complaints about injury wasn't there, which meant he was really hurt and troubled.
"I'll get a nurse," Simpson said, knowing that Doctor Becket would be focused on caring for Williams.
"Rodney?" John asked, all thoughts about Weir and their conversation forgotten in light of what just happened.
"I...I..." he looked confused and lost. "I...made it go...I..."
"You saved our lives, Rodney, that's all you did," John said soothingly, knowing full well that Rodney was upset that the side affect of the enzyme was not gone as displayed here moments ago.
"I thought I was back to normal," Rodney said in a hushed scared voice, looking at John for help and understanding.
"We'll talk to Carson after he takes care of Williams and we get your hands tended too," John said, not caring what anyone thought. He wasn't ashamed of his love for Rodney, and though they would be discreet for professionalism sake, he wasn't going to hide it...not anymore. If someone didn't like it, he'd resign...he was sure he'd find something here on Atlantis to keep him busy while his lover/ his soul mate worked. He placed a arm around Rodney's shoulder's and led him to where Simpson and a nurse met them. He held Rodney close as the nurse wrapped both hands in a burn sheet and drenched it with saline solution and then since they only brought one gurney, let John help Rodney to the infirmary.

John waited with barely restrained patience outside the curtain where Beckett was treating Rodney, desperately wanting to be inside, but was forced to wait out here. He paced a few feet and turned and paced again, working on keeping his pace slow and taking deep breaths to keep calm.
"John?" Elizabeth said as she entered the infirmary having heard of the accident and that some people were hurt.
Sheppard turned to look at her and part of his rage from earlier returned, "What are you doing here?" he asked, trying to remain calm on all accounts.
"I heard some people were hurt," Elizabeth replied. "What happened?" she asked, ignoring the anger she saw in his eyes.
"Some huge cable blew out from the wall, was whipping about, sparks everywhere..." John closed his eyes to focus and then opened them and continued in a more professional manner. "Williams was struck but no one could get to him and Zelenka was working on getting the power off. Then..." he was unsure if he should mention ALL that happened, but since it was witnessed by several others, he knew he had no choice. "It suddenly whipped toward me and Simpson, as we were trapped and then...well..." he wasn't sure how to explain it.
"Then what?" Elizabeth prompted.
"Rodney," he said simply.
Elizabeth gasped, "How much electricity was running through that? Is he okay?" she asked with sincere concern and fear.
Seeing the error of Elizabeth's conclusion, John shook his head, "He didn't touch it...he...he...made it move away and kept it at bay....mentally," he said quietly.
Weir's brow furrowed, and looked at John strangely. "Mentally?"
"You remember how he moved things before?" John asked, knowing she did. "He seemed to be able to do so again..."
"My word," she gasped.
"Look, he's really freaked out about it, and it didn't help that his hands were burned when the power consol shorted out. Beckett is with him now," John replied, turning and wishing Beckett would come out.
"How bad are his hands?" she asked, knowing how important they are to Rodney's work and life, like most peoples...but Rodney used his hands in all things it seemed, even communication.
"I'm no doctor, but from what I saw, the burns didn't appear that bad, I didn't see any third..." John began, just as the curtain pulled back and revealed Carson Beckett and two nurses, that headed off on some errand. "How is he?" John asked, forgetting all about Weir.
"His hands are going to be fine, couple of second degree burns and a few first, they'll be right as rain in a couple of weeks," Carson replied, but noticed his words didn't soothe Sheppard, who was looking at the sleeping figure behind him. He looked too and knew John was wondering why Rodney was in a hospital gown with an IV if the injuries were not that serious. "He was in shock and from what I was told that happened, I understand why. I sedated him, treated him for shock and I'm going to run some more tests to see what's going on."
"What happened?" John asked Carson. "He told me you said it was over. That the side affects of the enzyme was gone...he was tired of people being afraid of him," John said, feeling angry on Rodney's behalf.
"I'm honestly not sure, Colonel," Carson replied, the concern and guilt clear in his eyes. "That's why I've ordered some tests. I figured I'd get the more uncomfortable ones done while he was sedated. Sadly, I'll have to have him awake for a few others. But other then mild shock, he's fine as far as I can tell at the moment. The only thing physically that I can see are the whites of his eyes have gone gray a tad, but were lightening up even after my initial exam. I say they'll be back to normal by the time he wakes up."
"At least that's something," John said and moved to get a chair and pull it up next to Rodney's bed. He placed his hand on his lover's arm, the hands bandaged.
"How soon will you know anything," Elizabeth asked, concerned for her friend and head scientist.
"Few hours," Carson replied, "depending on how long he sleeps, as I said, a few I can't do with him out like this. In the mean time, just let him rest," Beckett stated.
"How is Williams?" John asked, feeling a bit guilty for not asking sooner, as that was why Carson took so long to get to Rodney.
"He's damn lucky, but he'll recover. He took a massive jolt and had some internal burns, his heart wasn't going when we got to him, but we were able to get it started again. I think a few minutes longer..." Carson looked grim at the thought of almost losing another of their Atlantis family.
"Rodney saved his life...saved all our lives with his...his...gift," John said, having purposely chosen the word gift as a way of referring to the ability Rodney now seemed to possess. "He did what others couldn't, he kept that thing at bay, giving me and Simpson a chance to escape and for others to grab Williams..."
"I must agree," Zelenka said as he entered the infirmary having overheard the last part of the conversation. "I was not able to turn off the power until moments ago. From what others tell me, we would have three serious injured if not dead...so it be a blessing, yes?" he asked, looking at the others.
John nodded yes, Beckett looked thoughtful, but Weir looked unhappy. "This could be a problem, especially if his behavior becomes effected again," she stated, old fears cropping up within her.
"He's more afraid of what happened than you are," John stated firmly, seeing the almost distant look in Elizabeth's eyes. "He was afraid of becoming a monster, and even at his worst, he was focused on saving me and our team...those are NOT the actions of a monster or a person to be feared," John stated, as he stood and ran his free hand over Rodney's hair, caressing the few bands aside in a tender manner.
The only person who appeared surprised by John's actions was Elizabeth, even though she was told not that long ago, that John and Rodney were in a relationship. "Do you think you should be a...a bit more...discreet?" she asked, for though she wasn't homophobic, she knew the Military was and who know who might say something to the wrong person when the Daedelus returned.
John glared at Weir, "Let me get one thing straight," he said, naturally keeping his voice low, as Rodney was resting next to him. "I am NOT ashamed of loving Rodney and though I'll be discreet on the whole, I'm not skulking in the shadows. If worse comes to worst, I'll resign..."
"You can't," Weir objected sternly, her tone indicating she meant it.
"Shh," Carson snapped firmly. "This is not the place for this conversation," he stated and with a nod to John, closed the curtain, cutting them off from Weir and Zelenka who was frowning at Elizabeth. He then took a few steps toward Weir, "I'm not sure what's going on, but I have no problem with those who love each other being of the same sex, so long as they respect each other and do no harm. As far as Colonel Sheppard and the American Military, I would have thought you'd be the first one to support him, as we're here...in Atlantis, not on Earth."
"I agree," Zelenka added, also having moved close so their voices wouldn't carry. "After all we have sacrificed, this is our home and we have earned the happiness being here can provide...otherwise, what is point, no?" he asked, and then with a look at Carson, who nodded his agreement, Zelenka departed, and moments later Beckett left too, leaving Weir alone with her own thoughts.
***
John was waiting again, this time, he was just outside of the MRI that Rodney was having, with Carson as they both watched the screen that was displaying Rodney's brain. John was full of a thousand questions, but after his second, was told to hold them until after all the tests were done, which was now as he saw Rodney being released from the MRI. Instead of spouting out his questions he went in the other room to help Rodney get up. Rodney was not that steady because his hands were bandaged from the burns and a bit woozy from the pain medication Becket had him on.
"Here you go," John said as he helped Rodney sit up. "How you doing?"
"Better, my hands are numb, though no one better ask me to save the city or fix anything as I'm taking a hiatus until their healed, that includes the Wraith attacking. It's the least the damn universe can do after turning me into a freak," Rodney snarled, the anger masking the fear, but John saw through it.
"You are NOT a freak. And I'll have you know, it took over an hour for Zelenka to get the power shut off. Williams would have died and Simpson and myself could have been hurt if not killed as well. You SAVED us, Rodney, just like you always do," John grinned, proud of his lover and placed a quick kiss on his lover's cheek.
"I have to agree with the, Colonel," Beckett said as he entered the room. "If not for you, things would have gone poor indeed."
Rodney just looked away, carefully folding his arms around his chest, cradling his hands under his arms. After a moment, he looked sideway at Beckett, "Well?"
Beckett sighed, unsure if the news he had to give would be taken good or poorly. "You're brain activity and the area we discussed before is up, but NOT like it was before. The improved activity has remained as I said when I cleared you, and it seemed part of that is powering this...telekinesis you've developed."
"Why did it come back now?" Rodney asked, the slump in his shoulders apparent.
"I'm no expert in this, Rodney. I don't think there is one, but my best guess is that it never went away that..." Beckett started.
"Guess...GUESS!" Rodney shouted. "We're talking about my brain here, Carson, not some lab rat's...Mine...Genius here. WE can't afford things like GUESSES!"
"Calm down, Rodney," John said, hoping to calm his lover.
"Calm...we're talking my brain has....has....MUTATED...and I've become some...FREAK and you're telling me to CALM DOWN?" Rodney snarled.
John understood the fear if not the full impact this might have on his love, and so took the shouting calmly. "Yes, I want you to calm down and let Carson speak," he said, rubbing a hand up and down Rodney's back, which seemed to be helping.
Beckett waited until he saw Rodney nod, then continued. "What I was saying before, it is my hypothesis," he smirked knowingly at Rodney, "that it was your emotional state, your...desire, not to see people, specifically John, get hurt. From what I was told, your ability manifested itself moments before that cable was about to strike John and Lisa."
"Which means what?" John asked, wanting clarification.
"It means that it never left, only lessened and from what I'm seeing won't be going away either. In fact, there is a possibility you might be able to control..." Becket began.
"Control it? I don't want to control it, I want it gone," Rodney snapped.
"Rodney, do you know what you're saying? You have the ability to move things with your mind...making you...unique..." Carson replied, stunned by his friend's words.
"Try freak, monstrosity, mutant..." Rodney started listing.
"STOP!" John shouted, his anger darkening his eyes. "You are NOT any of those things. Didn't I just tell you, you saved MY LIFE? You saved the life of Simpson and Williams, who knows how many others you might be able to help."
"Easy for you to say, you're not the one everyone avoids or whispers about behind their back, thinking I don't hear them," Rodney replied, the hurt and anger from how he was treated before back in full force.
"I won't deny some of those things happened," Carson said, having heard some of it himself. "But humans by nature fear what they don't understand, even though we're scientist and curious about the unknown, when it goes beyond our conception to the unfathomable, it...it takes time. They just need some time to get use to you..."
"Used to me," Rodney spat as he jumped up from the MRI table. "I'm STILL human, that has NOT changed. There is NOTHING to get used too. So what if I can move things with my mind, it's not any more different than me thinking circles around everyone here," he growled his temper growing, unaware that the smaller roller table next to them was beginning to shake.
"Ah, Rodney," John said, but Rodney ignored him and continued his rant.
"I'm still the same person that saved everyone's collective asses when the City was about to flood, or taken out by the storm or....solved a thousand catastrophes since coming here," Rodney snarled, beginning to pace, waving his bandaged hands in the air, to emphasize his words.
"Ah...RODNEY!" John shouted, moving and pushing both McKay and Beckett out of the way as the small portable with several items on it, went sailing past and smashed into the wall, just avoiding hitting John and the others.
"That was close," John said with a small grin, and then turned to see the surprise on Carson's face and the fear and shock on Rodney's. "Rodney?" he called out and went to place a hand on his shoulder, but Rodney flinched. "Rodney?"
"I am a monster," Rodney gasped out in horror, and before anyone could move, pushed his way past and out of the room.
John may have hesitated trying to understand what just happened, but soon was quickly on Rodney's heel. He just missed the transporter that carried Rodney away. John jumped into the next one and closed his eyes and thought of the transport taking him the same way Rodney went. He knew that if anyone else currently in the city tried this, it wouldn't work, but John's bond with Atlantis was special and he was becoming more and more grateful for it, as the lift began to move.
John wasn't surprised when the lift opened and he was on the same section of hall that led to Rodney's room...no, their room. Even though technically John had his own room, over the weeks, John had slowly moved into Rodney's room little by little. Both men seemed happy about that. He hurried down the hall and opened the locked door with his mind and hurried in. Instinct or something clued him in to head to the bathroom and he arrived second before Rodney was about to put his fist into the mirror. John was able to stop him. "Whoa, what do you think you're doing?" he demanded.
"Get away from me, I'm a freak, I could hurt you," Rodney snapped out, but the anger was doing a poor job of covering up how upset he was.
"You would NEVER hurt me, Rodney, and you're NO FREAK," John insisted firmly.
"You saw what happened in there, I could have hurt you and or Carson..."
"Stop....ah...stop," John said, holding up a hand to show how serious he was he wanted Rodney to be silent. Once Rodney was silent he continued, "Now, I'll say it again and I'll KEEP ON saying it for as long as it takes to get through that thick skull of yours...One, you are NOT a freak. Two, you SAVED lives today with your ability. Three, it's a GIFT, something special, just like the rest of you. And FOUR, if you stop freaking OUT, you'll know that Carson was right. If you learn to control this...gift, things like what happened in the lab won't happen. Besides, I also believe what Carson was saying about it being fueled by your emotions...strong ones. Nothing started to happen until you lost your temper...so..." he said, letting the words linger as if a leading question.
"So...." Rodney said after a long pause, sounding contrite and embarrassed at the same time. "I remain calm, things won't go flying."
"Right," John said, once again proud of his genius and kissed him tenderly. "As for the others....it's just one more thing we're all going to have to accept about being out here in the Pegasus Galaxy. I mean really, after squid-like ancients, life-sucking vampires and mist people, what's a little telekinesis among friends?"
Rodney knew that if he had not already been in love with this man, he would be all over again for John's warm, wonderful insight and big heart. "I guess nothing, if you put it that way."
"Guess?" John asked teasingly, after listening to how Rodney ranted about the word.
"Okay, I KNOW, alright?"
John laughed, "Yeah," he said, then led Rodney out of the bathroom to go cuddle on the bed. He knew they would have to wait for more, since he knew how his lover was, exploring with his hands. Of course it wouldn't stop him from loving his baby...something he'd never call Rodney out loud, but McKay was his baby, to love and protect and cherish and if he had it his way, he'd have forever. But right now, the moment called for tenderness, not passion, and Rodney looked tired. "Come on, let's take a nap," he said, striping Rodney down to his boxers and doing the same for himself. If there was an emergency someone would call. Once he got Rodney settled, he curled up to his lover and had Rodney's head rest on his shoulder.
"Oh, how did it go with Elizabeth?" Rodney asked with a little relaxing sigh, but he felt John tense at his question. He raised his head and looked at his lover, "that bad?"
John actually thought about lying to his lover, but knew better. "Not so good. She was angry we didn't say anything before and...she wants you on another team..."
"Another team?" Rodney asked, his eyes showing it was NOT something he wanted.
"I told her to forget it," John said, for in essence that is what he said, he didn't see any point in saying anymore, but as usual, when Rodney was not having tunnel vision on some brilliant idea or crisis, he was very observant.
"What are you not telling me, John?" Rodney asked shifting up and looking down at John.
"Well..." John hesitated.
Rodney's eyes went wide, "Did she threaten you?" he asked with some disbelief for he really didn't see Elizabeth Weir doing such a thing.
"No...no, she didn't threaten me," John replied, for that was true.
"Then..." Rodney prompted knowing there was still more John was not saying.
John shifted under the deep stare, and knew he had to tell him. "She threatened to send you back to Earth." John saw Rodney freeze and waited for his reaction, but when it came, it was not one he anticipated by a long shot...Rodney burst out laughing. "Rodney?"
Rodney was laughing so hard he fell on his back, as tears started to rolled down his check, "That...that..." he was laughing so hard he couldn't talk.
"Did I miss something?" John asked, for he didn't see the humor in what Weir had said.
"That," Rodney swallowed hard, taking in a deep breath to calm himself. "That was the biggest empty threat I've ever heard," he chuckled, using his arms to wipe the tears away.
"She was serious, Rodney."
"Please," Rodney said. "Even if she really wanted to, she couldn't...this place wouldn't survive without me and we all know this," Rodney replied, calming down. Then he took a calming breath, thinking for a little bit, "but perhaps she's right."
"Right?" John looked surprised that Rodney was agreeing with this. "We talked about this? I don't want another scientist on my team..."
"John, please, I don't like it either, but perhaps it would be best...at least for a little while, until Elizabeth gets a chance to calm down and realize our being together won't jeopardize the mission."
John was quiet as he looked at his lover and then nodded, though he didn't like it, he understood. "Okay, but just for now." He then settled down and got Rodney settled back in his arms, and was pleased that moments later, he was sleeping. John sighed, "Just for now," he muttered and closed his eyes to join his lover in sleep.
***
Rodney knew it was his idea to agree to being on another team, but seven days later and he was more than ready to join John in rebellion against Weir's wishes, for Major Loren was getting on his last nerve. They had come to this world and found a people who called themselves the 'Anon'. They even turned out to be a friendly bunch, but were very particular about who could wander outside their village or small town...only warriors. And since Major Loren had opened his big mouth and mentioned that Rodney was NOT one, he was STUCK in here...bored out of his skull. And if that wasn't bad, once again, his 'Pied piper' charm was drawing children to him like flies to...well...honey. So, trying to make the best of a bad situation, Rodney fiddled with his laptop, trying to ignore his audience, three kids, two girls around five, one blond haired the other light brown and a boy around eight or nine, who kept hovering.
"What you doing?" the little blue eyed girl asked.
"It's what ARE you doing, and I'm working," Rodney snapped, hoping his porcupine temperament would chase them away.
"Working how?" the other girl asked, while sucking on her left index finger.
Rodney gave out an annoyed sigh and turned to face the two little urchins, "I'm working on finding the power source that I detected upon arriving here through the gate. Of course, I'm sure that means nothing to any of you, so why don't you all go play in traffic or something," he told them and started to turn back to his laptop.
"What is a pow sors?" the blond asked with innocent curiosity as the brown haired girl giggled and the boy smirked, thinking this man was just too funny.
Not wanting to be an overly monstrous ogre, he turned back and looked at the three with a glare that normally sent over half his science team running and the other half breaking down in tears but it wasn't doing a damn thing on the kids. "Look, since I'm stuck here...and I can't go find what it..."
"Where is it?" the boy asked.
Sighing, "It's that way," he pointed toward a wall.
"That's toward the river," the blond said.
"and the caves," the other girl added.
"Look, I have work to do, please...just..." Rodney shook his head, wanting the kids to go away. He wasn't good with kids, didn't know how to relate to them, never got along with those his own age when he was one, and wasn't doing that much better with his peers now. Why kids seem to find him so...appealing was truly beyond him.
"My brother knows a way to the river," the boy spoke up, interrupting Rodney.
"I'm sure many people do," Rodney replied. "Look, I'll give you ah..." he started searching his pockets for a bribe.
"No, a special way," the boy piped up enthusiastically.
This caught Rodney's attention. "What do you mean special?"
"Means he knows how to get past the grown-ups," the boy beamed, the pride in his older brother glowing from his eyes.
Rodney was usually above the idea of taking advantage of children, even in a hypoglycemic state, he wouldn't take candy from a baby....unless no one was around and it was a last ditch effort...then he'd make sure he got the kid more, much more. But this was important. The power source could very well be a ZPM and even with one, they'd need more to power the shields, especially if the Wraith came back. "Do you think you're brother would take me?" he asked, trying to soften his voice and not look so scary, which must have succeeded as the girls giggled and the boy laughed. "You know, so the grown-ups don't notice us?"
"I can ask him," the boy said and rushed off to ask his brother.
The moments drew into an awkwardness, for Rodney hadn't unpacked anything but his laptop and if the brother could take him, it would only take a moment to shut it down and pack. He sat there trying not to fiddle as the two little girls just stared at him like he was Mickey Mouse or someone equally famous to five year olds.
"So...do either of you have names or do you only giggle?" he asked, and saw his words made them laugh, which made him feel a bit better inside.
"I'm Reshina," the little blond said.
"I'm Naya," the other little girl replied, moving forward bravely and gave Rodney a hug. She didn't quite reach his neck, and her hands couldn't wrap around him, but the intention was there and it startled Rodney as he never had a kid hug him before.
"Ah..." he patted her back, wondering what he should do. "You can let go now," he said, trying not to panic, after all it was just a hug. Sadly, seconds after Naya let go, Reshina hugged him and moments after that, he was double timed by both of them. "Oh boy," he said, really unsure what to do, other than pat them both on the back. "Okay...okay, thank you, thank you very much, you...you can let go now...yes, now would be good," he said, and breathed a sigh of relief when they let go and backed up.
"We like you, you're funny," Reshina smiled.
"Ah, well, glad I could entertain you," Rodney said, and got more giggles. Thankfully the boy returned and the boy with him was probably around fourteen/fifteen.
"This is my brother Iken, I asked him if he would and wants to know what's...." The small boy turned to his brother as if he forgot what the rest of the question was.
"I want to know what's in it for me?" Iken asked, his hazel eyes looking sharply at Rodney.
"Ah...what do you want? I've got some...power bars," he suggested pulling out two of them, but saw the older boy frown, but the little girls' eyes lit up. He sighed, glad he only pulled out one. "Here, split it among you," he said and offered one to Naya who was closer, after opening for them. "You don't eat the wrapper, just the inside," he said seeing Naya eye the shiny foil.
"Got a knife?" the boy Iken asked, wrapping his arms around his chest, with a smug expression, as if he really knew he had Rodney over a barrel.
Rodney had one, but he was appalled at the idea of giving a kid a weapon. "I will NOT give a child a knife or any other weapon, forget it, kid. I've got food, candy, and perhaps some clothes, but I draw the line as handing out instruments of destruction, especially to a child," he said firmly, turning to go back to his work on the laptop and forget this nonsense.
"What is candy?" the little boy asked. "What they have?" he asked pointing to the power bar the girls had.
"No, that's food, this is candy," he said and produced a chocolate bar, knowing it was probably forfeited the moment it made an appearance in front of children. He opened the wrapper and broke off a piece, "Here try some," he offered the small boy.
"Mmm," the boy moaned in delight. "You MUST try it, Iken, I have never tasted anything so wonderful before."
"Can I have some?" the girls said in stereo.
Already conceding its fate, Rodney broke the rest of the bar into four pieces, taking one for himself, as the little boy already had a piece and shared it with the other three, who all glowed over its taste.
"And you have more of this...candy?" Iken asked, seeing perhaps he was too hasty to deny the strangers offers.
"I have two more," Rodney stated, knowing he had three, but he would hold one in reserve.
"Did you hear that Iken, two more," the little boy beamed.
"Yes, Corwyn, I heard him, now hush," Iken snapped, and looked at the strange man with what he hoped was keen eyes, then nodded. "Agreed," he said, holding out his hand for the candy.
Rodney pulled out only one bar and gave it to Iken. "One now, the other when we get to the caves on the other side of the river, deal?"
Knowing this stranger was not as stupid as he looked, Iken conceded. "Very well," he agreed and placed the candy bar in his pocket. He then moved to the wooden door and looked out and waved for them to follow him.
Rodney anticipated youthful exuberance, had his laptop off and in his pack and was lifting on his shoulder as he moved to the door. He saw the other kids following. "Ah, no, just us...you stay here," he stated firmly and moved to follow Iken and closed the door behind him. He hoped the kids got the message and moved with Iken down side ally like paths through the small town to the very edge where there were lots of trees that could be used for cover if one thought about it.
They were over a half hour into their trek before Rodney realized he and Iken were not alone...it was probably the giggle that gave it away when he whined about getting a rock the size of a bolder in his boot and wanted to stop and get it out. Thankfully Iken took the job of yelling at the three little brats, but they were close to the caves, having crossed an extremely shallow part of the river and it was rather foolish to turn back, especially since it would probably mean getting caught and he'd lose his chance to explore.
Iken grumbled that the kids had come with him before on many occasions, so they knew the way, but they knew never to come out here without him. The reason the town had a 'rule' about warriors only leaving was because there were wild creatures that could be dangerous, though they were few and far between nowadays, according to Iken. So, grudgingly Rodney accepted their following and the small group continued their trek towards the cave where he was picking up a power reading. He wondered why he didn't pick up any life signs of the others, as Major Loren and the 'rest' of the warriors were out looking for this power source and Rodney was sure no body was even close to their general direction.
Another five minutes passed when Rodney froze in his tracks the whining sound that buzzed in the distant was all to familiar. He turned and could see the dreaded alien craft in the distance. "WRAITH!" he shouted, "the cave, run," he ordered and scooped up Reshina and Naya in his arms and stared running with Iken and Corwyn in the lead, as the Wraith darts flew over head. The wraith beams were still a distance from them, but apparently they didn't just pick up their prey, they also dropped off ground troops as was evident by the wraith they ran across.
Rodney didn't think, he dropped the two little girls, praying they'd be okay, as the Wraith posed more of a threat then being dropped in the tall grass. He grabbed his side arm and shot the wraith in the chest and head, just like John had showed him, over and over again during their weapons training sessions. He was never more glad for them then he was now as the Wraith dropped to the ground. "RUN!" he shouted to the kids, Iken came to his senses and grabbed the girls and once again headed toward the caves, as Rodney hurried along with them. Rodney suddenly realized that Major Loren didn't know he was NOT in the village...idiot. "Major," he called into his radio but instead of reaching anyone a high pitched audio feedback came screeching back at him, forcing him to pull it from his ear and unknowingly drop it on the ground.
A chorus of screams not that far from Rodney got his attention and the radio was forgotten as he dashed forward and saw a Wraith snarling at the children, enjoying taunting his young prey. "BACK OFF!" he shouted, his anger at the thought of these things scaring the children overriding his fear as he fired his gun, again, chest on up into the head. Wraith took longer to heal if it didn't kill them, to strike their brains or what passed for them.
Something whizzed passed him and he dropped out of instinct, the gun tumbling out of his hand as he hit the ground. There was another Wraith that had fired a stun weapon. It was close to Reshina and smiled like a shark and reached down as the Wraith did when they were about to feed.
"NO!" Rodney shouted, only aware that this thing was NOT going to hurt the children. The next thing he knew the Wraith flew and smashed into several tree branches, which were at least fifteen feet off the ground and dropped hard on the other side of two trees, stunned. He was exhausted but experience from being in these situations knew he needed to keep going. "Come on, we need to get to the cave," he said as he got to his feet, grabbing the gun. It was Naya that first screamed followed by Reshina and they pointed. Rodney immediately turned to shoot the Wraith behind him, but there was nothing. "What?" he asked as the two little girls suddenly started running away...from him and the cave. "STOP!"
"You...your eyes..." Iken said, crab walking away from him.
"Crap," Rodney said, pulling out his Raybands and placing them on, as he KNEW what happened. "We don't' have time for this," he snarled and grabbed Corwyn and gestured with the gun for Iken to get up. "Head to the cave," he ordered and started to go after the girls, as they were sitting ducks out here for the Wraith.
He was glad to see Iken listen, even if it was out of fear to be away from him, and grab his brother, for that was, he hoped, two less to worry about. He could see the little girls up ahead. "It's okay,' he called out, hoping to convince them he wasn't going to hurt them, when once again a Wraith jumped out in front of them, causing them to scream and cling to one another in fear.
Rodney aimed and fired getting two in the Wraith's chest, when a stunner clipped his right arm and he dropped to his knees, the gun flopping on the ground near by. He spotted the second Wraith with the stunner making its way closer, but he was more focused on the injured Wraith who was looking at the two little girls as food for healing. "No," he growled and this time he focused and shoved that thing back and hard...after a few heart beats, it did, and without much more thought, Rodney looked at the second one and it too went flying; both now doing an imitation of shish kebobs.
"Are you all right?" he called out. Part of his right side was numb from the stunner. He was grateful to whoever watched over arrogant geniuses that the Wraith hadn't hit him full on. "It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you, I swear," he said, seeing the girls still huddled together crying. It took an effort, but he got to his knees. "We have to get to the cave...I can protect you better there...please," he begged, knowing he wasn't going to be able to carry them.
Rodney reached out to get the gun and knew he should have listened to John about learning to shoot with both hands, for at the moment he was more than ready to confess to him being right, if it meant John would show up right about now. Sadly he didn't, and Rodney forced himself to his feet as the Wraith Darts continued with their culling and probably dropping off more ground troops, to force strays out into the open. He was deeply thankful the two girls were now at least looking at him, "Please, come with me," he begged and smiled with relief when the girls ran to him and clung to his legs. "I can't pick you up, my arm..." he said, and it didn't take much for them to see it was not working. "Just stay close," he said and started making his way to where he thought the cave was as he hadn't seen it yet.
Thankfully it wasn't that far and Iken, though still scared, seemed a lot less when he saw Rodney was bring the girls with him. "How far back does this thing go?" he asked as he entered and with Iken's help eased the pack off his back and grabbed the flashlight. He saw it only went about fifteen feet back and there were writing and other markings, but a whimper from the front of the cave, was more than enough to get Rodney to scramble forward and saw a Wraith heading towards him. Rodney tried to aim and fire and missed...badly. As he saw the Wraith raise his stunner Rodney didn't hesitate further, and with a thought the thing was sent sailing into the trees, a thick branch piercing it, keeping it at bay for the moment. Rodney knew two things then, that he was not going to be able to move from the front as he knew more would be coming and second, that the Calvary better show up soon, for with each burst of 'power' he was feeling more and more drained, which meant he wouldn't be able to keep this up forever.
***
When John got the call that he was needed along with his team to help Major Loren's team because of a Wraith attack, John's heart leaped into this throat. Even as he ran to the jumper bay, visions of Rodney being beamed away into the Wraith dart ship filled his mind, even if he didn't see it outright, it still had happened and they had just barely gotten him back...he couldn't lose him now...not ever. He knew in his soul Rodney McKay was the one, his soul mate, husband, chosen, whatever word someone wanted to use for the person you were destined to live out your life with and possibly more. These last few days had been hell for him. He knew it was just him missing Rodney, but...it was like he could tell when Rodney was gone from the city and around; he knew it was him missing his lover, but it was hell none the less.
Now, Rodney was in trouble, he didn't need facts to know that, just the word Wraith was good enough, and why he was speeding into the puddle jumper, leaving the time it took to get settled in for his team of those going to get in, as he mentally closed the hatch.
He made radio contact with the control room as the jumper automatically went into the sequence of preparing to depart from the gate and once it was clear and the gate open he had the ship fly at full speed through. Once on the other side he made radio contact with Major Loren, "Sheppard to Loren," he said as he mentally cloaked the ship. "Where is your team?"
"Most of us are eight clicks due east of the town," Loren replied.
"Most?" John asked, knowing he wasn't going to like this as he had a VERY bad feeling Rodney was not only in trouble but sick and he couldn't shake it.
"We left Doctor McKay in the town, the natives were very persistent about non-warriors staying put," Loren replied, feeling an explanation now would save his hide later.
"Sheppard to Rockwell and Stackhouse, set up a surprise for our Wraith buddies...don't let them through the gate, understand?" he asked, but it was a rhetorical question.
"Yes sir," both replied.
John closed his eyes for a second and the weapons came on line. He shot the nose out of the first Wraith Darth he came across, praying the majority of the ship survived, since they now knew how to retrieve those taken by the beam. He also prayed Rodney was NOT among them. As he thought of Rodney more, his gut was telling him Rodney was not in the town but in another direction and he was torn for a moment of which way to go. Instinct won out and he turned heading west of the town, taking out another Wraith Dart, again hitting the nose portion of the shop in hopes people could be saved if enough of the holding area survived the impact.
"Colonel," Telya said, noticing they were not heading to the town as she surmised from what Major Loren had said where Doctor McKay was. "Should we not head to the village?"
"McKay's in trouble," John said, now knowing this as well as he knew how to breathe.
John took out three more Wraith Darts before getting to the spot he wanted to be but couldn't land because of a the thick canopy of trees. "Sheppard to McKay," he called over the radio, not getting a response and some how knew he wasn't going to get one. He checked the sensors and read eight wraith around a cave area...most of them not moving. "EIGHT!" he gasped out and mentally said screw it and brought the jumper straight down, hoping he squished a few of those bastards.
The jumper shook a bit as it smashed the many branches of the trees, clearing way for it to land and John, Teyla, Ronon, and Chavalof, his temp scientist from the biology department, saw two Wraith approach the cave entrance only to go sailing back and become speared by thick tree branches. It explained why so many Wraith were present but not moving...they couldn't. "CRAP!" John swore, as Ronon and Teyla did the same in their own languages.
"Ronon, Teyla, I think you have some clean up to over see," John said as he grabbed his P90 and headed to the hatch, which was now opening. "Doc, just stay put," he ordered over his shoulder for Doctor Chavalof was far from broken in.
John didn't even ask if his other team members understood their assignments, he knew they did...they were to finish off any Wraith that were still breathing. "Rodney!" he shouted as he started approaching the cave not wanting to get tossed like the enemy. "Rodney!" he shouted again when he got no answer. To his surprise a little boy around seven or eight ran out, his face filled with fear and tears.
"He's hurt," the boy cried out and ran back in.
John double timed the short distance and entered the cave to see Rodney near the side of the entrance where two little girls were hugging him, as he lay slack against the stone wall, blood running from his nose. One of the girls, a blond was putting Rodney's sunglasses back on his face, but John saw the black and blue eyes to know what had happened. "Rodney," he called out, and dropped to his knees in front of his love. He reached out and thanked God that Rodney was breathing, though he felt cold and clammy. "Rodney," he called out again, as he reached into his pocket to get a handkerchief and wiped Rodney's nose to see if it was still bleeding or not. He grinned when he saw Rodney stir.
"Knew...knew...you...come," Rodney said softly and then went unconscious again.
"Rodney...." John moved and lifted the glasses and opened one eye and saw the coal black where it normally was white and the crystal blue, made more so by the dark background. His pupils were constricted but active...that was something. He placed the glasses back on and was glad to see the nosebleed was over, but by the stain on Rodney's uniform, it was bad. He scanned Rodney and didn't see any other injuries. "Come on, we need to get him to a doctor," he said, hoping the kids would understand.
"He's blessed by the spirits isn't he?" an older boy asked, as he and several other people, who had come to take shelter in the caves came forward, weary of him and probably Rodney.
"I have never seen such eyes before," a woman said in a hushed voice.
"He saved your lives," John snapped, wondering if these people understood what had happened and wasn't judging Rodney as some of his own people were.
"Yes," said a old man. "He saved many of us this day, with the blessings of the Spirit...but many know to receive such blessing come with a heavy price...we fear for him, that he may not see another day."
John was glad these people were not speaking ill of his lover, he wouldn't tolerate that. He nodded, "He'll be alright if I can get him back to my ship," he said, once more gently pulling the children to get them to let go. A woman's hands came from his right and the young boy who spoke's hands from his left and removed the two little girls. He then pulled Rodney forward and using a Fireman's carry took him from the cave. By the looks of what greeted him, Teyla and Ronon understood well, as there was nothing but bits of Wraith left. "We need to get him to Beckett," he called out.
"Stackhouse to Sheppard."
"Sheppard," John said as he carefully balanced Rodney on his shoulder, as he hurried to the jumper.
"Two more Wraith ships have arrived, we managed to take one down. Major Loren is reporting the one is the last one in the air, sir," Stackhouse reported.
"I've got McKay but he's injured. I just entered the jumper," John said as he did so, laying Rodney down on the sofa area with the aide of Doctor Chavalof as Teyla and Ronon came to the hatchway. "Teyla and Ronon are going to remain behind and make sure there are not other Wraith lurking about. I'll see about taking that other dart out on my way back, but if I miss, you makes sure it never leaves, got it?"
"Understood, sir," Stackhouse asked. "Sir...is...Doctor McKay hurt bad?" he asked.
John knew many misunderstood Stackhouse, like they did Rodney, but it did his heart good to know folks cared about his lover and friend. "I'm not sure," John said honestly as he shared a look with Ronon and Teyla to see if they caught their instructions as he moved to the pilot seat. They nodded and moved out as the hatch began to close and Doctor Chavalof oversaw Rodney.
John easily got the puddle jumper off the ground, not even noticing the broken trees as it went straight up. John mentally checked the cloak and headed for the gate as he dialed Atlantis. "Sheppard to Atlantis."
"Atlantis, we read you John," Weir's voice replied.
"I need Beckett standing by and I need to talk to him," John stated, as he read the scanner to see if he could pick up the Wraith dart as he went.
"I'm here, Colonel," Carson's voice replied quickly as if he was already waiting in the control room, which he probably was.
"Carson, Rodney's eyes...they're black and blue again. He was tossing Wraith like rag dolls," John told him.
"Oh my, how is he feeling, behaving?" Carson asked.
"Can't tell you, Doc. He's unconscious. He's cold and clammy, his pupils are constricted but responsive and he had a massive nosebleed. Beyond that I can't tell you more...CRAP!" John swore as the Wraith Dart almost collided with him, as he zipped over him. "Just a second, doc," John said as he turned the puddle jumper toward the dart. He'd give it a shot, literally and if he missed he was through the gate, and thus a good thing he had Atlantis dialed as the Wraith dart wasn't going anywhere as it too was heading in the same direction now.
John wanted to get to the side or in front of it, for if he destroyed the rear section of the ship, any people that had been beamed up would be lost. He knew they'd rather die than become wraith kibble-n-bits, as Rodney put it once, but still, he had to try.
"Stackhouse," Sheppard called over his radio. He knew what firepower awaited the Dart at the gate, and he knew they were to try and aim for the nose of the ships as well, but...but. "The Wraith Dart is heading your way. I'm trying to get a lock on the nose of the ship, but if I can't and we get too close..."
"I understand, sir," Stackhouse said, for if Sheppard was too close to the gate as he was planning to go through, the ship would automatically slow down and it would be up to him to take the dart down.
It was tense for moments as John mentally pressed the ship forward and just for a second he had his chance and he fired and the nose of the dart exploded, sending the ship spiraling to the ground. He could only pray enough of the ship survived for people to be rescued. "Got it," John informed his people. "Major, I believe that last one is in your area, secure it. Back up will be arriving once I've gotten McKay to Atlantis...we'll discuss why he was NOT in the town later," he added, his tone, though even, made it clear he was far from happy, and he cut the channel after Loren acknowledged his orders.
The gate came into view and he sent his IDC code and let the puddle jumper do its thing for going through the gate and turned to see Rodney looking pale and unconscious behind him. Doctor Chavalof had placed an emergency blanket over him, and for that John felt grateful. Deep down he knew Rodney would be okay, but he couldn't help but worry, his lover was hurt...yet he felt whole being so close to him. Not as good as being in Rodney's arms, but better then when they were separated by the gate.
John was familiar with the hoax time played on him as it seemed seconds became hours as he arrived on the other side of the gate until the ship settled and he could get the hatch open. Then he watched as Carson entered, and started examining Rodney, and then as if by magic, John noticed the IVs, oxygen and portable heart monitor all in place as Rodney was being rolled away. He had zoned, and suddenly realized how drained HE was. He always felt more tired when he was away from Rodney, and more energized when they were together. Hell he slept better with his lover...but many couples could claim that, and that's how he knew they were definitely a couple in so many ways. Automatically he followed the medial team as he tapped his radio. "Sheppard to Weir. The darts are down, as of my entering the gate. It's unknown if they'll send more once they realize their...people, aren't returning. I suggest an evac ASAP and a science team to see if they can retrieve those in the ships."
"I understand. I'll inform Major Loren to begin the evac, but I'm not sending in a science team at this time..." Weir began.
"Elizabeth, there are people trapped in those ships," he protested.
"I am very aware of that Colonel. I am also aware of how long it will take to get them out if and I mean IF we can do so. My priority is the people I know I can save with the time allotted. As you said, the Wraith will come to see what happened. But I will see what I can in the mean time, Weir out," Elizabeth said and closed the channel, effectively ending the conversation.
John bit his tongue so the word BITCH didn't slip out. He knew he could make different orders, but none of his men could operate the equipment, only the civilians and they were under Weir, and even if he believed if pushed came to shove, they'd probably follow him, he wasn't about to test that theory...today.
John came to a halt outside the area Carson was taking care of Rodney, knowing it was best to stay out of the way, and wait for the all clear before moving up to be with his lover. As he stood there, watching the clothes coming off with the aid of scissors, he smirked knowing Rodney was going to be ticked at having to request yet ANOTHER uniform, as Carson keeps destroying them. He could just hear their last conversation between the two men.
"You know how many uniforms I've had to request replacements for since coming to Atlantis...mostly because you keep CUTTING THEM?" Rodney snarled at Carson.
Beckett chuckled, "Rodney, if you'd stop getting so hurt where you can't get undressed yourself for me to attend to you, then it wouldn't be necessary."
"Are you saying it's my fault?" Rodney asked, his eyes wide with shocked disbelief that Carson would imply such a ridiculous thing.
John couldn't help a small chuckle, but the laughter died as he saw how pale his lover looked and knew in a small way, Carson was right. It wasn't that Rodney went out of his way to get hurt, it was par for the course going through the gate. He then saw the brain scanner they used since SG-1 had discovered what it was and how it was used, being used and then saw Carson walking over to him. "Well?"
"He's okay," Carson said, knowing it was best to get the overall report up front. "He over did it with his ability and burst a few cells, which at present isn't a danger to him..."
"At present...what does that mean?"
"It means if he were to continue on the same level or whatever he was doing for an extenuated time, and he continued to burst cells like he has, it would lead to possible brain damage and death..." Seeing John pale, he moved him to a chair. "But as I said, John, he's going to be alright. Though, can I ask, what was he doing?" Carson asked, needing to know how all this came about.
"I don't know the extent, but when we arrived, Rodney and some other people were in a cave that a large group of Wraith were trying to lay siege to, and as I said before, he kept tossing them away, most of them getting speared on tree branches...about ten from what I saw were laying stuck," John explained. "As to what happened before..." he shrugged. "Can I..." he nodded toward Rodney's bed.
"Aye," Carson said and helped John to his feet and moved the chair so he'd be comfortable as he began his watch, but was a bit surprised to see Sheppard not sit down.
John took Rodney's hand and kissed it. He took a deep breath and leaned in and whispered. "I love you and I'll be back. Rest until then, baby," he said, then kissed Rodney on the lips and turned to go. "I have an evac to oversee, I'll be back. Call me..."
"No worries, Colonel. He's in good hands and resting. I'll call you if there's any change or he begins to wake up," Carson promised and watched Colonel Sheppard attend to his duty, knowing Rodney would understand and expect no less of the man. He would love him more for it, then he too went back to work, for if they were getting refugees, they were going to be many injuries to attend to and he had to get things organized.
***
Slowly, Rodney opened his eyes and by the colors, lights and smells, he could tell he was in the infirmary, even before his vision began to clear. He heard a sound next to him and turned his head a little and there was his John, looking unshaven, clothes wrinkled and somehow not a single damn hair out of place; after Atlantis, that was his next mystery to solve.
"Hey," John grinned lovingly. "You know, I don't think you were what the writers had in mind when they wrote sleeping beauty, but..." John shrugged, "works for me," he chuckled and leaned in and placed a chase tender kiss on Rodney's lips.
"What..." Rodney began to ask, when it all came back to him. "THE KIDS!" he shouted as he bolted up, John not able to stop him as it was so fast.
"Easy, Rodney, they're fine, you did good, you kept them safe, they're all safe," he said as he put a bit of pressure to get his lover to lay back down, just as Carson entered the curtained off area.
"I hear you're awake," Carson smirked, having heard Rodney across the infirmary. "The wee ones are just fine, Rodney, as are all those with you in the cave."
Rodney settled down a bit, "what about...the others?" he asked, not sure if he wanted to know the rest of the place had been culled. He knew it wasn't all good news by the quick glance the two men shared. "Well?"
"We lost almost thirty percent of the populace," Carson answered somberly.
"But none to the Wraith...directly," John added, hoping it helped, for he knew how caring Rodney was, even if he tried to hide it. "Not one Wraith Dart got through the gate. We retrieved as many as we could..."
Rodney understood all to well. Over all, considering entire civilizations had been lost, it still felt like a failure at the moment, but knew that the Anon would rather their people die with the ship being destroyed then to become a meal to the Wraith. He felt John's hand take his and felt a bit better. "Well, it could have been worse," was all he stated.
Carson understood how deep Rodney could feel things just like Radek and John, for he had taken the time to know the man. He also could see it in both Rodney's attempt to cover his grief and John's actions. "By the way, there are some folks who have been very anxious to see you," he said, feeling his guests would cheer Rodney up. "They've grown a might inpatient with you sleeping for almost two days..."
"Two days?" Rodney asked, as he couldn't believe it, especially as he still felt tired.
"You over did it, and we'll discuss the dos and don'ts of your new ability later,' Carson said, his tone making it clear it would be a firm one.
"Here," John said with a grin, handing Rodney his Raybands. "I know how you feel about..."
"They're black and blue still?" Rodney asked, as he took the glasses and swiftly put them on.
"Aye, but it's fading faster than the last time," Carson said as he moved to the curtain, turning to make sure Rodney was ready...well as ready as he'd be at the moment. He then stepped out for a second and then he pulled the curtain open.
"RODNEY!"
John stepped back and felt like the sun had found a direct route in the room as the warmth filled him, seeing Rodney's face light up seeing the thee younger kids come charging at him, safe and sound, and VERY happy to see him. He watched the bigger boy give the girls a boots onto the foot of the bed and before anyone knew it, both Reshina and Naya were hugging the stuffing out of Rodney and the boy Corwyn was doing his best to help too, which was why Rodney didn't see the group of Anons gather around the foot of his bed.
John had stepped closer to his lover, for there was a lot more than he had expected, who turned out to see Rodney. "Rodney," he said, and stopped, seeing his lover hug the kids back, no longer hinder by what had made it so difficult for him to relate...at least for the moment. Then he saw Rodney snapped his head up as it became clear they were not alone and to what John perceived was a nightmare, Corwyn accidentally knocked his sunglasses off and the people of Anon gasped when they saw his eyes. John prayed it didn't go sour as things were going so well.
"You...you really ARE blessed by the Spirits," the leader known as Ezel stated in awe and then bowed his head, as did all the adults.
"Ah..." Rodney rushed to get his glasses on, "Look, I don't know what you're thinking..." Rodney started defensively.
"They THINK, you're blessed," John said with emphasis so Rodney wouldn't say something offensive, which he could easily when he was upset, and John could tell he was. "You ALSO saved their Leader's GRANDDAUGHTERS," John said, nodding at the two girls that were still hugging Rodney like a teddy bear. He just hope he didn't have to make them let go, for Rodney was HIS teddy bear....at that thought John grinned mischievously.
"Yes," Ezel said, as he raised up along with the others. "You protected my granddaughters and many others in the cave, in a way only one truly blessed could. You're people helped saved many who had been taken by the Wraith and though many were lost, their spirits can rest having not suffered such a horrible fate. You have opened your world to us, when you did not have to, especially since you go to so much trouble to hide it. The Athosians have opened their arms to us and granted us land on the mainland where we will rebuild until it is safe to return to our home. On that day, both your people will always find an open door, a full table and our deepest gratitude. As head of my family, you Rodney McKay and your family and their descendants will always find the same with mine," he announced and then bowed again, along with everyone else.
"You did good, Rodney," Weir said, who had been standing the background the entire time.
"Way to go, McKay," Major Loren grinned, having had his 'discussion' with Lt. Colonel Sheppard, but couldn't deny when someone did something brave and courageous, and he was coming to realize Doctor Rodney McKay did things like that a lot.
John's eyes were on his lover and though he couldn't see his eyes, he could feel...know Rodney was deeply touched and didn't know how to handle it. He knew Rodney saw not only the Anons but many of the citizens of Atlantis and the Anthosians, all coming out to see Rodney when Carson said he would be waking today; all waiting to give this moment to him....he was very proud of them all, but mostly of his lover.
"I hate to break this up, but my patient still needs his rest," Carson said, seeing how overwhelmed Rodney was, and knew how drained he had been. If anyone had to play bad guy here, it might as well be him. "He'll be out and about day after tomorrow..." he said, gently moving people back as he pulled the curtain so he could begin to close off the area.
"Your healer is right, we will let you rest. Until later," Ezel smiled and with a nod of respect, the people began to move off, but for two young women who came to get their daughters and a slightly older woman and Iken who got Corwyn.
"Thank you," they all whispered with reverence and tears of joy in their eyes as they grabbed their children who let go reluctantly. John noticed Rodney was a bit reluctant to let go as well. Perhaps the idea of children in the future wasn't such a far fetched fantasy after all...sure they'd have to adopt or something, but...well...those were thoughts for MUCH, much later.
"Don't worry, you'll see each other again later, I promise," John said, his words addressed to both, and glad his words soothed his lover.
Once everyone but Carson and Weir were gone, John reached out took the sunglasses from Rodney's bed, having not been placed back on. "I don't think you'll need these anymore," he said, but only got them snatched out of his hand from his lover.
"I'll be the judge of that," Rodney said, but didn't rush to put them back on.
"You're no monster, Rodney," Carson said, having learned of his friend's fears. "Your just more special, and there is a whole LOT of people out there willing to come back in here and explain that to you."
"Carson's right," Elizabeth added and reached out and patted Rodney on the shoulder like she used too, but hadn't done in a long while...since it happened. "I'm sorry if anything I may have done made you feel bad. It was an adjustment for all of us, mainly for you. But you're wanted and needed here, Rodney, don't EVER forget that," she smiled.
"There, it's official," John said and leaned in and kissed his lover on the cheek, considering him and Rodney off duty and in private. "But, we're STILL going to discuss you going off by yourself," he added knowingly.
"Hey, I wouldn't have had to if Major..." Rodney began but only got cut off by a kiss from John.
"Later," John said once he was done, aware of the smirk from Carson and the half smile from Weir. Then he turned to face her, "For the record, we tried it your way, didn't work...he's back on my team," John stated evenly and confidently, with just enough of a look to let Weir know he was VERY serious.
"John, this still could have happened if he was with you," Weir began, but then saw the arched brow on both Rodney and John's faces, "Perhaps not," she said, knowing John would never have left the 'civilian' alone, and would have left Ronon or Teyla behind or lie and said Rodney was a warrior; which sadly was something that was becoming true. "Okay, we'll give it a trial run and see," she replied, willing to give it a chance, but if she had to, she'd stand her ground...but later. "It's good to see your feeling better," Elizabeth said to Rodney and then left.
"We'll discuss things later, just rest now...which means NO WORK, or exercise of ANY kind," Carson said giving a knowing look at John, "and I'll let you out of here...tomorrow morning," he added after a beat, just to wind Rodney up a tad, he'd expect no less.
"You're all heart," Rodney growled, wanting to go sleep in his bed...with John. He then gave a tiny smile, as Carson let and met his lover's eyes. "So...um..."
John just shook his head, and leaned in and lovingly kissed his lover again, and then perched himself on the side. "It's going to be okay, Rodney, honest. No monster mutations, no FREAK...you saved lives, Rodney...LIVES. Anything that helps someone do that, can't be so bad...can it?" he asked sincerely.
"I guess not, but it'll take some getting use to," Rodney agreed, then yawned.
"Before you fall back asleep on me, I want to let you know, from the moment I gated to the planet...I could feel you. I knew you were in trouble and WHERE to look, like a built in homing device."
Rodney looked only a little concerned. "You tell Carson?"
"No, it's between you and me...I think when we shared minds, we shared a bit more," John said softly. He then could feel some insecurity creeping up inside Rodney. "I wouldn't have it any other way, Rodney. It lets me understand you more and I believe lets you understand ME more. It'll also lets me protect you more...not that you can't protect yourself," John said, seeing Rodney's mouth open.
Rodney chuckled, "well, it's not mind reading, as I was going to say good," then the smile melted to a more loving and serious look. "I felt you too, but at first I thought it was just wishful thinking...but even that thought kept me going..." he started to say, then went silent, not sure what more to say.
John knew words were not needed here and held his lover tightly in his arms and kissed his temple and rocked him until Rodney slept. John tucked him in and knowing he'd be well, was going to get some rest himself and a shower and a change of clothes. Just as he reached the curtain, he heard a snore and grinned. "Yep, still human...imperfect as the rest of us...but always special."
THE END.
