Summary: Seven unrelated drabbles, in the order in which they were written, stretching from the movie to the distant future. Some sadness, some laughter

THE EFFECTS OF POLLEN ON SG-1

They stepped through the gate into a field of wildflowers. Sam looked around with delight, half-smiling, anticipating the first sneeze. But, of course, it didn't come, and her face fell.

Teal'c, seeing this, knew just what had happened. His eyes were soft and wistful as they scanned the riot of color that stretched to the horizon..

O'Neill glanced at the man to his left, then kicked sullenly at a blossom of brilliant violet hue, sending its petals scattering into the breeze. "Carter, take Teal'c and check out that ridge. We'll meet up on the other side."

"Quinn, you're with me."

THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE

Strange, the things that could make a person fall in love.

Daniel saved his life on that very first mission. Second trip, Jack was moved beyond words when he witnessed Daniel's parting from the Abydonians. He admired tremendously the way Daniel handled his worry and grief; and his fierce resolve to find his captured wife.

But none of that did the trick.

No, it was the first time they shared a tent. Daniel talked in his sleep. Chinese? Jack stared in the half-light and felt a rush of emotion he hadn't experienced since the early days with Sara.

Truly strange.

FANTASY

If I close my eyes, it's his hand touching me, not my own.

I know what it's like to be held in his arms. I've felt their strength; I know his scent.

I've seen him naked, in the showers. I don't stare, but I see. I picture him now, and my hips surge off the bed.

His brown eyes are looking into mine. I've seen them look at me in admiration, in anger. Laughing. Concerned. I've seen warmth there that makes my spine melt.

I moan. My hand moves faster.

Warmth, but never passion.

Guess he saves that for Daniel.

IN THE BEGINNING

She was a very beautiful woman. But beautiful women weren't usually his thing.

On the other hand, he would never have imagined that Air Force colonels were his thing. Yet he could readily imagine seeing Jack O'Neil's face each time he closed his eyes at night. For the next fifty years or so.

But Jack had gone home to his wife. And Daniel was here with...his.

And she was a very beautiful woman.

Life was a series of surprises. Some a lot more pleasant than others. This was one of the best.

And what might have been, would never be.

NO COMMON GROUND

"Daniel."

"Jack?"

"We have absolutely nothing in common."

"True." Daniel pursed his lips. "It's a wonder we've stayed friends this long."

"I didn't mean that!" Jack protested.

Daniel smiled. "I know. So, what? I like wine and you like beer." He shrugged.

"Right," Jack agreed.

"Chinese food."

"Pizza."

"Books."

"Movies."

"Documentaries."

"Sports," Jack said emphatically.

"Museums." There was a long pause. "Jack?"

"I'm trying to decide what the opposite of a museum is." Daniel snorted. "Ah! Fishing!"

"Okay," Daniel nodded, "bottoming."

"What?" Jack's eyes widened in surprise.

"You heard me," Daniel said, looking at Jack challengingly.

"Really?" A smile slowly spread across Jack's face.

"That's not an answer," Daniel murmured, lips twitching.

"Topping," Jack said with a gleam in his eye.

"Still think we'd never make it as a couple?"

Jack shifted a little closer to Daniel on the couch, and placed a hand on his thigh. "I'm willing to admit when I've been wrong."

"That's one of the things I like best about you," Daniel sighed. He reached out for Jack, and they sank eagerly into each other's arms, lips pressing, moving, parting. Hands clutching, roaming, stroking. Hearts beating faster, excitement growing.

Joyous proof that opposites really do attract.

A LIFE, DEFINED

"We had a lot of fun, didn't we?"

Daniel swallowed, squeezing Jack's hand. "Don't say that like it's over. I'll be following you before you know it."

"Take your time. And if you meet somebody nice, just bring 'em along."

"There won't be anybody else. I could never be this lucky a third time."

"They say...time's...charm." Jack's voice faded in and out.

Daniel leaned over the bed, and Jack's hazy vision was filled with much-loved blue eyes, glistening with tears. "I looked that word up in the dictionary. Charm? Had your picture next to it."

Jack smiled. His eyes closed.

A MOMENT IN THE BALANCE

Jack was plastered against his side, half-draped over him. "I wasn't expecting this," Jack said. And it sounded like he was regretting what had happened. It sounded like acute discomfort and withdrawal.

But the plastering, the draping...

Mixed signals from Jack O'Neill, the straightest straight-shooter Daniel had ever known? Had he pushed too hard, too soon?

"Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition," Daniel said lamely, cursing the betraying tremor in his voice.

Jack gave a bark of laughter. His head came up, his eyes met Daniel's, and they were shining and clear.

Beaming, Daniel tightened his hold. He'd gotten it right.
